Haven't encountered any problems with EAC since the last few months.
Playing this game is doable for those who really want to play on Linux, but not good enough to fully recommend.

There's a Linux-specific issue that causes severe GPU bottleneck-induced fps drops typically after a map roll. So far there's no known solution other than the HighResShot command fix mentioned in other posts which doesn't always work.
The cause isn't known either, but discussion has pointed to it being potentially related to VRAM. Having a good enough GPU seems to mitigate it.

I haven't noticed any other players that have had this issue so I'm inclined to believe it's either unique to my system or an NVIDIA bug, but running on XWayland frequently causes crashes making the game unplayable.
Running on just X works fine.
As of GE-Proton7-21, users are able to play multiplayer out of the box without needing to tinker with EAC anymore!
Having to either frequently restart the game or deal with a slideshow for the rest of the session is what currently breaks being able to play Squad on Linux for me.

Was able to host a server and play with a friend; did not notice any problems.
