In the beginning of the game you'll need to set a name for your character. In gaming mode it is not possible to enter anything, even when a keyboard is plugged in. You'll need to launch the game in desktop mode, get to that point, set a name, and save. After that you may return to gaming mode and continue playing without any issue.
