Set graphical settings to low
The game freezes on the loading screen after the main menu if graphical settings are set to ultra by default.
After the initial setup, the game runs without problems at 60 fps and 5 hours from the battery. Easy to play on the trackpad.

disappearing mouse cursor
To fix the missing cursor, you need to play either in the desktop mode or copy all files from: ...Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\Assets\res\Cursors to: ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Assets\res\cursors That will replace the default BS cursor with the original one and it will not disappear anymore in game mode.
If you use the BAT Mod you also need to replace those files in the mod folder.
When configured, the game works as it should. For the Steam Deck screen, I recommend a 960x600 res. LCD batt ~4-5h.

The main menu is distorted, but you can navigate it. In desktop mode, incorrect window placement or graphical menu glitches may occur.
- Install cnc_ddraw via Protontricks.
- Download the latest 'cnc-ddraw' and unpack it into the game folder overwriting all files (https://github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw/releases)
- Set compatibility to Proton Experimental
- In 'RA2.INI' and 'RA2MD.INI' replace 'ScreenWidth=X' and 'ScreenHeight=X' were 'X' is your desired resolution
- Set the TDP limit to 3-4 and Scaling filter on Pixel if on lower res.
- Play

- Download the game via Steam
- Delete all contents of the "Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun" folder
- Download Tiberian Sun Client (https://www.moddb.com/mods/tiberian-sun-client/downloads/tiberian-sun-client-600-with-videos) and unpack it into the empty game folder
- Rename Tiberiansun.exe to sun.exe (don't launch it)
- Install cnc_ddraw via Protontricks.
- Launch the game, change the resolution to the desired one in the settings, and update/download game videos.
- Set the TDP limit to 3-4 and Scaling filter on Pixel if on lower res.
- Play
I launched the game with mod 1.13. After editing the JA2.ini file, the game works without problems.

UI is small but manageable
At resolutions other than native, the game launches in the top right corner with large black spaces at the bottom and to the right.
In the JA2.ini file, set the resolution to 9 (1280x800) and PLAY_INTRO to 0. The latest 1.13 version of the mod can be downloaded here https://github.com/1dot13/source/releases

edit the ja2.ini file to set a custom resolution. Set SCREEN_RESOLUTION = 25, and CUSTOM_SCREEN_RESOLUTION_X = 1024 CUSTOM_SCREEN_RESOLUTION_Y = 640. Or use the 16:10 Aspect Ratio Calculator to find the one that you like.

Definitely playable, but the game needs optimization. At low settings, FPS drops to ~20 some times.
Everything is on low. FPS lock 30. Dynamic RES on in the game menu.
During rain, FPS drops to ~25 fps. While collecting resources, FPS drops to ~20.
The battery lasts for 1.30 - 2 hours of play (LCD). The fan sometimes spins up, but not much.
Despite the "not recommended" tag, this is an ideal game for the steam deck and works great.

I wouldn't say that the game is playable straight out of the box. It's too early and the game needs to be optimized.
