Ran with (almost) Windows-like performance after disabling NVIDIA Hardware PhysX; few crashes; gamepad and force feedback work like a charm.
Used "protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10" as well as FeralInteractive's GameMode ("gamemoderun %command%" in launch options).
Slight performance drop from 60 down to ~45 FPS when entering a new area.
It crashed about 7 times within the 14 hours I've been playing it on Linux, which wasn't a problem due to fast loading times and frequent checkpoints.
It's virtually unplayable with hardware accelerated PhysX on, else it's playable on highest settings at a near steady 60 FPS on a 4K resolution.
Won't run with SteamPlay, have to use Lutris. Runs like garbage for a 9 y/o game that ran fine on my last Windows PC (mid-2012).
Tried both install scripts from Lutris.net which use StrictDrawOrdering.
CPU load at 90 % across all cores, runs at approx. 15 FPS the whole time.
Finally working out of the box! (except for alt-tabbing out and back in)
Couldn't change back to full screen mode after alt-tabbing out, had to restart the game.
As other users already stated, this game used to run like trash (if at all), but now it's running buttery smooth, no further steps needed. Just make sure you stay in full screen mode, as you may have to restart the game after alt-tabbing out. Gamepad's working too!
Tried every Proton version out there (including GE-custom), it just won't start. Cracked .exe didn't work either so it's no DRM problem.
Fully playable, finished it in about 30 hours. XBox One S Gamepad fully supported, including rumble/force feedback.
Mouse control lagged a lot, but this issue was also present on Windows, so it's not Proton's fault.
Had about five crashes within the first 20 hours of gameplay.
Used "-nostartupmovies" parameter to skip low quality intro videos.
Runs mostly smooth on highest settings. XBox One S gamepad fully supported, including rumble/force feedback.
Had to use a No CD Crack to launch the game.
Got some serious frame drops when driving off-road.
Had serious performance issues on newer Proton versions.
Everything Just Works™
As stated abundantly, Valve got DRM working, hence this game now running perfectly without any sort of crack. You'll earn achievements, too! Xbox One gamepad also working perfectly (as with previous versions).
Installs fine, Launcher opens, then crashes when you hit "Play!"
Tried both Proton 5.0-9 and 5.11-GE-3-MF, neither of which worked. Same with Lutris. Also tried using Protontricks to install wmp9 which didn't help either.
You'll have to add 'cd "${STEAM_COMPAT_INSTALL_PATH}/launcher"; %command%' as launch option or you won't get past the loading screen.
Working perfectly out of the box now
Valve really nailed it with the latest Proton release, no more silly DRM-related issues, like this game not opening up at all. Even my Xbox One gamepad's working with rumble support, if you're into that stuff.
Had to use "protontricks 8190 dlls d3dx10 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47"
There seemed to be a minimal mouse input lag.
Had some weird issue after changing Proton versions, had to delete compatdata for this game (id 8190) and re-apply "protontricks 8190 d3dx10 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47".
Benchmarks worked fine, game runs perfectly smooth at steady 60 FPS on highest settings.
protontricks 8190 d3dx10 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47
Nothing changed since Proton 5.13-1 except now you don't have to download a crack for this game you already legally own. You still have to run protontricks though, otherwise the game will only show a black screen. Xbox One gamepad still working perfectly. No performance issues whatsover. Note that I've only played this for a few minutes.
Finished the full game on 100 % without any issues, not a single crash. Gamepad worked fine, no rumble support tho.
It actually ran better on my system than its predecessor (LEGO® Star Wars™ III: The Clone Wars™) which is whitelisted by Valve and still crashed a few times.
Ran perfectly out of the box on native 4K @60 FPS; both XBox One S and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller fully supported.
I tried vanilla WINE 5.19 before with the retail version of this game, which always crashed after about 30 secs in-game. The Steam version however works perfectly fine for me with default Proton (3.16 I assume).
Finished the whole thing on 100 % (about 35 hours) without anything I'd consider a major issue. Had it crash for about 9-10 times though.
Some cutscenes would lag heavily and/or mess up completely (e. g. black screen or weird aspect ratio).
Some menus took a few times to recognize button input from my XBox One S gamepad. No impact on actual gameplay.
The game would crash a few times for unknown reasons when I played it for several hours on edge, then ran fine again for a few more hours.
Both versions (2011 and 2013) playable without any further tweaks on Proton 5.0-9. XBox One S and Switch Pro gamepad fully supported.
Couldn't set in-game resolution to 1920 x 1080 in 2011 version. Proton 5.13-1 didn't seem to work.
Won't startup at all
Tried multiple Proton versions (i. e. 5.0-9, 5.13-1 and 5.11-GE-3-MF) with and without "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" launch option, it crashed every time. Same issue with Lutris. Serious Sam Fusion (which includes this title) works fine though, so I won't bother getting this one here up and running.
Can't get a constant 60 FPS despite the game's age; better play Serious Sam Fusion 2017 which runs natively and includes the same features.
Grass and trees in the intro screen flicker, in-game seems fine (so far).
Some areas are limited to ~40 FPS even on medium settings while others run at a near constant 60.
Any Proton version newer than 4.11 would (still) crash during startup; at least now, there's a progress bar.
