Without switching to older version of Proton, shortly after starting the game steam window moves to front, and the game freezes
Needed specifically Proton 5.0 and protontricks 304240 -q wmp11 to get through the black screen after the capcom logo on startup.

Playing the game without crashes or hangs requires specific version of custom proton fork, which is terrible experience for typical player.
6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Works with specifically Proton 6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll, 6.10-GE-1 caused crashes on, among others, startup or some cutscenes, haven't tried other versions of Proton GE
I have also tried other versions of proton: Proton 6.10-GE-1: the one I used initially, seemingly worked fine and made few saves, but in the middle of the game, in a cutscene with helicopter, game hanged and had to force reboot PC, after that no matter what I did the game crashed on startup. Proton 6.3-4: crashes between 2 cutscenes when starting the game as Leon, after the one with the truck driver ends and before the one with leon driving the car to the gas station. However when loaded a save in the police department from another playthrough when I used another proton (ge), I could play seemingly just fine. Proton 5.13-6: hangs on the loading screen after the gas station gameplay, before the cutscenes when arriving in Racoon City. Loading a save in police department works seemingly fine as above.
