After hours of tinkering, gave up and refunded.
I was really hoping this game would work as well as PGI's other Mechwarrior titles on Linux. I tried vanilla Proton 8, 9, and Experimental. Tried Proton GE 7, 8, and 9. Tried various launch options. The most I could get is the "Press Any Key" screen, but (as reported by other users as well) the game would not register any keypresses, mouse clicks, or controller inputs. Ultimately had to refund. Will try again after a few months or whenever Russ announces they've made some Linux compatibility updates.

Occasional stuttering
Without DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME=model the game crashes at first splash.
The game works flawlessly in single-player. However if those seeking co-op experience will presently be disappointed.
Co-Op doesn't work. Others see my invites, but they hang at "Connecting to game server...". I do not see invites from others.
Tried several Proton versions, including experimental and 6.9-GE-1.
New Canyon Network map has some missing meshes which appear as gray squares
Solaris City map can cause massive framerate drops
Works OoTB w/ proton-GE and nVidia 3070 but not nVidia 3080
The base system is exactly the same. Using the nVidia 3070 it works well as reported by other users. However, using the nVidia 3080, the game crashes at the initial black loader window when dx3d is initializing. MWO launcher logs do not register the crash. Proton logs show a variety of low-level execution errors.
There are many reports by other MWO players about the 3080 issue for Windows, but the solutions are specific to Windows and the Windows nVidia driver.
I'd love to see a fix in Proton-GE.
Works fine after launch options tweak. GE Proton 9x is recommended for peak performance.

Using DATA's user.cfg tweaks for performance
Since the Nov 2024 patch the game will occasionally begin stuttering significantly during a match and require a client reload to clear the issue.
I play competitive MWO on Linux without issues.
