Perfect performance on my hardware (GPU is Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti), but varies A LOT depending on proton version. I'm running it with GE 8-27 currently and experience is flawless, but when I tried GE 9-2, it would use up 100% of the CPU and run like a stuttering mess. Highly recommend trying out several proton versions if your performance is subpar.
Unable to login with correct credentials
Shows "invalid email or password" prompt. Quite possibly it is some Proton incompatilibity with WoC's services, since I was able to login and play on my Android phone without any issues. Tried Proton versions: 6, 7, 8, Experimental, GE, no idea how to debug further. Tried both pasting and typing password/email, double and triple checked everything, no avail. Used to encounter same issue before, it randomly appeared and resolved.
Coudn't play the game for months, going hopeless with no googlable solutions. The game would work, but didn't let me join the game, throwing alabasterbeard (xbox services connection) error. Fixed by switching from Proton GE to Proton Experimental. Since then worked like a charm
On fullscreen, cursor sensitivity ignores settings value, which makes it pretty slow on large monitors
Extreme stutters on Nvidia card due to shader caching. Gets easier after hours of play
Intro
Shader caching produces extreme (several seconds long) freezes and stutters in otherwise ideally performing game. Basically made me quit the game over last two years, however I remeber that on one previous Linux install I was able to endure stutters and freezes for about 10-15h until everything was cached and then the game became extremely fluid.
Steam Deck performance
Steam Deck does not have the same problem as it downloads shader cache in advace, so performance is perfect out of the box. Unfortunately, it is stuck in controller mode due to how the game handles inputs, so you can only play it in handheld mode, no kb+mouse. Saw a potential fix online, but did not attempt it.
My GPU model:
- Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti with Max-Q
The following settings made the game much less miserable on my current install:
- DirectX 12 (select in launcher settings)
- Fullscreen
- Vsync = off
- GPU Particle Quality = disabled
- Dynamic lightning = off
- Volumetric lightning = off
- Local Reflections = off
- Everything else on HIGH preset
Result
I still get ~3-5 second freezes while loading into any area or my Orbiter, but otherwise performance became bearable enough for me to give the game on Linux another try.
