Runs well out of the box when using Proton 4.2-9 and doesn't need any modifications (except for detail settings) to run well. There are little to no stuttering and maintains 60 FPS using v-sync for the most part with my computer when using all medium settings with a resolution scale of 100%.
The game works perfectly outside the box on the latest proton (as of March, Proton 7.0-1). But despite the game saying that its windows only, there is a .sh file inside the games folder by going to "Manage" then go to "Browse local files" and in terminal type "./PMKM.sh" will allow you to run a native linux version of this game just without the steam overlay but will record your play time.
This will be mainly focused on the new port of Munch's Oddysee. I will briefly talk about the old port later. Don't try and bother using proton ge. I tried and it doesn't play cutscenes and will crash. Using the latest proton version 6.3-8, I managed to get the game working with the cutscenes albiet with some errors. Trying to use gamespeak inside the main menu will not work and will display tv color bars that wont play any audio of Munch or Abe. Trying to play cutscenes "Backstory chaper 3" and "Backstory chapter 4" will also show a tv color bar screen without any audio and will automatically end after a few seconds. Other than those problems, I didn't find anything noticable that was wrong. The old port is much worse. I tried with the latest proton and proton ge. Both had issues with audio except from cutscenes. Game suffered from severe lag and crashed when exiting the first level.
Works well but Proton-GE can only play cutscenes/videos with launch options. Regular Proton can still play the game but with cutscene errors
WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 %command%
The only way at the moment to play the cutscenes and the informational tutorial videos is to use Proton-GE and pasting "WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 %command%" into your launch options. If you're using regular Proton, all cutscenes and videos will display tv color bars with static. Other than that, both Proton and Proton-GE can play the game without any performance problems or any texture problems.
Works just as great as on Windows
Update from last report: Game no longer needs proton-ge nor any launch options.
Game works as intended without any noticable issues. All cutscenes and informational videos work and look great.
Optional: If you're using any mods that use BepInEx like all unity games, use "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%" for them to work properly.
The audio will sometimes freeze for a moment during gameplay
Very rarely the game will micro freeze
From my testing, both proton-ge and the stable proton releases do not work. They will give you an error that wont let you connect online. The game works fine but I did use gamemoderun %command% for extra performance. During my 3 hours of gameplay the game ran smooth but with a few problems. Overall its playable.
