Unstable. Use the Linux port instead (github link below) by compiling and copying the executable to the main game directory.
Only way I could get the game to work was to use this installer package from the AUR to get the game from Steam - https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/doom3bfg-data/ - and compile the Linux port directly from source (AUR package didn't work): https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG
You can probably install the game normally and just copy the compiled executable into the folder, but I used the AUR package to download the game from my Steam account for me.
Note that the AUR package for the main executable (rbdoom-3-bfg) did NOT work; I had to download and compile from github directly.
Also, I could NOT get the vulkan version to compile, even after I installed the vulkan dev dependencies and spent time configuring cmake. The OpenGL version compiled immediately without any tweaking required.
Screen goes black during intro cutscene (Windows version on Proton) to main Doom 3 campaign. Tried several Proton versions, none worked. The other campaigns appear to work fine (my previous report was based on these).
When the screen goes black during the opening cutscene to Doom 3 campaign, sound plays, but you cannot exit the game or access the OS in any way. Hard reboot required.
All input stops responding after screen goes black in opening cutscene.
Guaranteed operating system crash on all Proton versions during Doom 3 opening cutscene. Random crashes can occur with older Proton versions.
Some other Proton versions only display a white screen with audio on startup.
Version 6.66 crashes after initial Bethesda splash screen. Too bad, was looking forward to playing this.
Game runs like native, on both vanilla Proton and GE. Highly recommend.
Game works completely other than noticeable but minor graphical bug. Played more than a dozen hours, and I plan to play more.
Using fullscreen mode (4:3 aspect ratio) causes the left side of the screen to display either a white bar or graphics from the main menu instead of a black bar. Very noticable, but minor - doesn't affect any part of the screen not being drawn to, and doesn't appear to affect gameplay in any way. Game is otherwise fully playable with no serious bugs or glitches.
Installs and displays initial loading screen, but crashes before main menu.
Black screen before menu (turns display completely off requiring hard reset).
This is after adding enough RAM to meet minimum requirements (before it just crashed to desktop before menu - see last report). Tried alternative Proton versions and GI, no effect. Also tried alternative video drivers.
Newer versions of proton run the game painfully slowly. 5.0-10 runs like a native app.
EAC doesn't load.
The game ran like native during the closed beta, but they haven't yet enabled EAC support for Proton.
