While a native Linux game, it does not work on modern versions of Linux. But it works without issues if you force it to run via Proton 9.0.x
If you are running Ubuntu 20.04.x (or older?), this game still works fine natively. The issue is that certain libraries are no longer compatible once your Linux installation is too new.
Only the background music appears to not be working.
Background music is non-existent, game sounds are fine.
No background music is heard
The game is starting, which is a big improvement from before. But, it only lasts a few minutes and then completely locks up.
It is still crashy, but it is working a lot better with Proton 7
I was able to play 30-ish minutes, to the first boss. The game completely crashed out during this battle.
Proton 7 has added enough functionality that this game is actually running. However, it is crashing after playing for awhile. There may be a tinker that can help prevent this, but I do not know what to try.
Music does not work, all other audio seems to be there.
The longer you play the game, the more "stuttering" occurs, and it can be very interruptive. Also, no background music at all ever plays.
Had to force Proton version to 4.11-12 to get the game to launch.
Been a long time since I tried this game, but with current versions of Proton, it is just working out of the box.
Text can have some pixels above it that make it almost look like foreign characters. It's still readable, but can slow down a speed reader.
My experience mirrors that of Dr FeelgoodMDs report below. The text can get slightly garbled, but not enough to hinder the game. I had to force the Proton version to 5.0.10 to get the game to launch.
It crashed on me 45 minutes into my first game play. I changed Proton to a version 5, and played 4 more levels without issues.
I did not try to play the game without the tweaks listed, since everyone else was stating to add them. Plays great!
I had to use this exact command to get the game to work: PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
Running great, slowness issues seen in the past seem to no longer exist.
Slowness occurred during cut scenes and plant selection, otherwise game play was fine.
I had to force Proton to version 6.x to get the game to launch, but did not need any launch options.
I had to force Proton to version 5.x to get the game to launch and play. I haven't put a lot of time in to it as of this writing, but I am not noticing any issues.
