Tested:
Single player and multiplayer.
Issues:
After installing the game, single player worked. Contrary to what I've read before, and what happens on Windows, there was no crash or hang during startup or when listing the workshop items. However, starting a multiplayer game caused the screen to constantly scroll to the left.
Text in text entry fields is invisible by default, flickers fast when typing.
Tweaks:
After exiting Steam and renaming "AoK HD.exe" to "Launcher.exe" as recommended by many, multiplayer also worked perfectly.
Text entry still does not work well. This might put people off. To me, it is acceptable.
Performance:
Superb, better than the original on Windows.
After playing single and multiplayer several times, I have to degrade my rating from gold to silver. Although the first issue of the screen scrolling to the left has not come up again, there was once an issue that after going into windowed mode, I could not click anything any more. Also, there is no way to use the window controls or move the window. Alt + Drag on Linux also does not work, although that might be unavoidable due to using Wine. With issues like that creeping up from time to time, it might put off a lot of people.
I upgrade my rating from silver to gold (again):
- issue: Screen scrolls in one direction after window loses focus. Workaround: I disabled the hotkeys for screen scrolling, which were the arrow keys by default.
- issue: Text invisible/filckering in text entry fields: I installed a couple of drivers and libraries in a failed attempt to Battle.net with Lutris, and now text entry is perfect!
- issue: Window handling. There are a lot of small issues with windowed mode, but at least after clicking the top border, it is possible to drag the window once, before the mouse is locked again.
After updating libraries for Lutris and Battle.net, text no longer flickers in entry fields. Window handling is inconsistent, but not too bad. 1 click is required in windowed mode at the top border to be able to drag the window. Workaround for scrolling lock: disabled hotkeys for screen scrolling.
Rating upgraded from silver to gold. The text flickering issue was fixed in the update from Proton 4.2-2 to 4.2-3 . Window handling is still troublesome, but overall manageable. Clicking the top of the window from the game should enable the mouse to drag the window once. Alt + Enter sometimes doesn't react, an Alt + Tab to a different window first might be required. Workaround for the screen getting stuck scrolling in one direction: disabled the hotkeys for screen scrolling.
No changes with Proton 4.2-4 and 4.2-5, still the same scrolling bug, with the same fix (disabling scrolling hotkeys). Works really good otherwise, with better performance than on Windows.
No changes from Proton 4.2-5 to 4.2-9, still the same bug of the game thinking one of the arrow keys is constantly pressed, which happens sometimes randomly after an Alt + Tab, despite "various window management fixes" in 4.2-9. Workaround: disable scrolling hotkeys. The tech-tree is still unusable sometimes with this fix, though.
The game won't start, only the launcher. First, after clicking "Play Game", a small error message box came up saying "DX11 feature level 10.0 is required to run the engine." Then I installed the vulkan mesa drivers. Afterwards, the game seems to start with a black screen, ending in a crash with a longer error log, with the main error being "Direct3DDevice-
CreateTexture2D() failed at .../Texture.cpp:471"
I tried disabling and enabling D3D11.
