controls.
I put it as a tinker specifically because initially controller support is not detected and went off of community guides to fix it. However the base proton version does run perfectly fine and any other version actually crashed the game for me at the start. Maybe I might have fiddled with something or maybe this is just temporary, but if you use a community layout to bypass the broken controller support which is an issue with the base game, it should be perfectly playable OOTB.
worked OOTB but it's likely you could tweak for battery performance or other personal preference options.
while this runs on the default proton configuration, you will need to tick the box to disable shaders the first time you run the game in order for protontricks to work on the game. It's not playable in this state entirely as collissions won't work and mission necessary visuals won't appear.
After launching and running it successfully like this, launch protontricks, default wineconfig, then install a windows dll or component. Select d3dcompiler_42, d3dcompiler_43, d3dcompiler_46, d3dcompiler_47, and d3dx9. After going through with this, wait for the window to reappear after it closes then go ahead and relaunch the game with shaders active. After this you can adjust how high quality you want the shaders, but everything should work as perfectly as it's ever going to at this point, have fun!
big ups to the comment by heretic at the bottom of this thread https://steamcommunity.com/app/340860/discussions/0/, I'm putting this up on protondb as confirmation and as an easy guide for everyone.
might be a bit finnicky selecting the resolution, you just need to hold your mouse pointer near the bottom to scroll down.
If you run on specifically GE-Proton7-49 everything should be fine. I can promise you any other version WILL have prominent issues.
If you do NOT use specifically GE Proton 7-49 the game will not function properly. Green lines for random areas and spots and outlining characters and enemies along with crashing and at the very worst some fixes will say other versions will stop these issues, but a separate issue is for a tricolor with static underneath tv screen gif texture will replace the room environment in the projector room in the castle for unknown reasons.
crashes occasionally at random periods when running on default.
I originally ran this game using a separate version of proton that seemed to fix the strange green lines and crashes. I wish I could remember the reason what version but for whatever reason it caused the projector room in the castle to not have a visible environment, for some reason it was replaced with a weird tv signal tricolor with static that made navigation impossible in the room. I'll make the screenshot I took visible on my steam profile but it was weird.
Anyway GE proton7-49 will fix the crashing, green lines and now THAT issue and works perfectly fine. No clue why, but it's the only version that seems to work.
assuming they can get past figuring out controls on keyboard or controller custom layouts.
controls
for whatever god forsaken reason these variated controls don't utilize the d-pad remove jumping crouching and reloading from the face buttons and assigned them to the back. I just swapped it so
A- jump space X- r for reload, v for firemode change on double press, b for underbarrel on hold Y- 1, 2, 3 for the weapons on single double and hold press respectively B- left control, Z for prone on hold press R stick is swapped from prone and crouch to F for interaction so now you don't need to rely on double pressing the touch pad
after this though the game had auto sprint as a toggle despite being disabled and when enabled would act as a single press instead of a hold press except the crouch as a button press seems to act as a cover mode if you aim while near any object.
this is on top of sensitivity not lowering when ads with a rifle so a lot of this just seems to be base issues with the game which is why I dropped it. Further tweaking for an even better layout was not seen through.
Maybe someone needs to play this further, but it seemed to me the base settings for controls were very strange and god awful, maybe the MARIO layout caused issues, but it didn't seem to cause any mode changes so I can't imagine how the issues with sprinting, crouching and aiming had happened.
Honestly while I modified marios layout I've seen even stranger layouts for fps games with even more players utilizing them, maybe I'm the weird one for preffering my A button to jump and assigning reload and gun modifying commands to the x button despite that being a standard for nearly every console released fps game ever.
jesus christ, honestly Y button for text and voice chat? there are three command types for a button and 3 slots for your primary secondary and melee, it's staring you in the face.
It defaults to all low with fsr at performance and the game can be played in it's entirety at a relatively solid frame rate.
I personally chose to lock the framerate to 30 in steam deck settings just to keep it consistent for me. It'll be fine regardless but make sure to turn off motion blur and chromatic aberration and all that. From what I've heard the first area is the most demanding and I warrant this is true as the second area I was able to bump up a few settings to medium and switch to balanced with fsr. What's funnier is I've experienced 0 crashes on my steam deck but it still crashes and is unstable on my ps5
You will have problems with a low playerbase, but if you wait in the lobby long enough you can get a bot team to still play the missions. I did get lucky and have 2 matches multiplayer which were a great time though.
if you want you could tweak controls for the joystick to behave as mouse, but just holding down the steam button and using the trackpad works well enough for me to consider it an enjoyable experience.
