Was going to write a positive review, but, since the recent Origin update, the game fails to launch.
Origin seems to be preventing the game from installing. Reinstalling BF4 will not solve this as Origin will no longer install. Previously, it was playable with v5.0-9 after adding the launch option '%command% -notexturestreaming' to correct for stuttering. Periods of high ping are also experienced as previously reported, which intermittently affect online gameplay.
Works so-so OTB. Previously, missing ping was no problem (see past report). Missing ping causes frequent disruptions during multiplayer.
Missing ping = frequent auto-kicks. Affects play in ~50% of servers.
Works just fine out of the box. Crashes are rare. The game crashed during multiplayer twice over about 40 hours of gameplay.
Rare
Note there aren't many servers to play on anymore with about 10-30 populated servers at any given time. Single player is just as good as it ever was, though! (Obviously this has nothing to do with Proton. Just an FYI for the Linux user looking for a new game.)
Missing ping issue present in BF4 is gone. Single player instability can be fixed by reloading the game.
High mouse sensitivity
Menu navigation, first few minutes of multiplayer, after cut scenes or checkpoints in single player.
Also works on 18.04 LTS. Game still has bugs unrelated to Proton - buyer beware.
Totally unplayable due to frequent crashes within 15 mins. of gameplay.
Could not use external display
As stated, automatic saves during gameplay would cause FPS drops
Stuttering during automatic game saves, when entering new areas
While moving or removing intro videos does help the game boot to the main menu, using the 64-bit binaries does not make a lick of difference in performance in my experience.
Initially would not allow display on secondary display
Only with Nvidia driver 455 (see my previous report)
Gameplay on certain drivers not stable. Unsure if this is due to Crysis or poor drivers.
Works as expected OOTB.
Escaping from full-screen will cause the game window to minimize and can't be opened afterward
The game still has loads of bugs and game saves sometimes will not load properly, though, on a positive note, this has nothing to do with Proton/Wine. Windows and console users experience these problems, as well.
Works great with no major intervention on Proton v4.11!
Optimizing graphical settings for your specific machine may be needed, though no tweaking of Proton under the hood should be necessary. I consistently get > 30 FPS in full-screen mode, despite what others have noted.
Experience should be approximately the same for the typical Proton user. Note that anticheat is still an issue intermittently.
Moving borderless window during boot causes game to bug out requiring force quit (stopping game from Steam won't work)
Game will not successfully boot about 50% of the time; game needs to be stopped and rebooted from Steam app
1.) Due to complaints about laggy servers on other platforms, it's unclear if the lag I've experienced almost every game is the same or worse because of Proton (still ranking down because of this) 2.) Anticheat has caused matchmaking to fail intermittently (for instance, I was able to play today but yesterday I couldn't join any servers)
Yes, the game works like a charm with Proton v4.11. Mouse sensitivity needs correcting, but this bug has been reported across platforms.
Mouse sensitivity was very high. I had to reduce mouse sensitivity to minimum settings in order to correct the problem. Afterward, mouse sensitivity still seemed higher than normal, but the game was playable with those settings.
