I tried the game in both proton (default install) and native (set compatibility to steam linux runtime) in game mode, and both worked great.
I added a controller layout with nearly all controls (I forgot to add a button to hide UI, but I'm not sure if I can even update the shared layout). This is far more than is necessary, but it was simple enough to do. Check for Tinytopia Controls in community layouts.
Unrelated: Text input on deck is a terrible experience, remniscent of early tablets in ~2010. I can't wait for mobile-style autocorrect/spellcheck.

Controller works fine but game displays keyboard and mouse controls
I have nothing to compare to (not tried on Windows), but it played perfectly fine for me. Didn't even have to force proton.

Runs well
Game froze once when building a house. This might have been a game bug though.

Tried the Demo and it works fine.
selecting the moving tools is inacurrate and works only randomly
