I livestreamed the whole thing. Near the end I found 2 minor inconveniences for which workarounds are provided below.
- First a clarification on my previous report: It was my very first report ever so I did not know that merely using GE-Proton was considered "tinkering", so I wrongly reported that I had tried it without tinkering. I always use GE-Proton.
Now after playing the game FULLY from beginning to end. Here are the important points:
Use GE-Proton8-XX! Personally tested 8-25 and 8-32. DO NOT use Proton 9. It causes a black screen.
DO NOT remove libEGL.dll, libGLESv2.dll and d3dcompiler_47.dll as I saw mentioned in other reports. This will make it work with Proton 9. But will cause massive FPS drops.
There is a visual effect during the max affection event for each character that causes a massive FPS drop. This still happens, but it only lasts a few seconds. Wait it out and you will be fine.
I had the game crash when the credits were about to roll. Probably something to do with playing fullscreen. I did it again in a maximized window instead and the problem was solved.
Overall I had a great experience with the game, having just the 2 minor hiccups listed here.

The game plays flawlessly so far. You can watch the VOD of my stream. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SayZ7SQeCoI
Use GE Proton 8-XX! Proton 9 yields a black screen. And for the love of God do not remove the dlls people tell you to remove. That causes massive FPS drops in some areas.

I submitted my report as a "no tinkering" report, as any tinkering I have done to try to get this game to launch has been unhelpful. I can't get this game to play no matter what I do. I get the background music, but no video. I've tried using different versions of Proton, I've tried some fixes found on Reddit such as un-commenting the Japanese language in locale.gen, etc. None of which worked, so I reverted my changes.

Delete or rename libEGL.dll and libGLESv2.dll, and optionally d3dcompiler_47.dll
Many maps run at at low framerates, about 10 fps or so. (Given the nature of the game, this does not affect gameplay.) The top-level affection cutscenes can take about 15 seconds to run one of the effects, making it appear as if the game has locked up; be patient.
Some users talked about using the built-in web version. That won’t work with modern browsers, unless you run an HTTP server. I wrote a utility at https://github.com/piquan/katakana-warriors-save-migrator to migrate your saves between the web and app versions. That also has some instructions on running the web version, but it’s not for the inexperienced.
Delete the files libEGL.dll and libGLESv2.dll in the game directory. These libraries are afaik cause problems with wine, I guess proton inherited the issue. This way I've been able to play it with the latest proton without any issues.
Sometimes I would hold an arrow to move and the character would stop. I had to release the button and press it again to start moving.
The game seems to run flawlessly at first, but on some maps the FPS drops to 5. The CPU and GPU usage stay around 10%, but the game is unplayable. For some strange reason some of the affected areas are very small, while huge city map, or dungeons work well. With this framerate even just moving to the exit of the room is a challenge. If you open a menu or enter shop in the area with FPS drop the game again renders at 60, but as soon as you close the menu it drops to 5.
This game doesn't work on default proton version Steam Deck uses. Experimental didn't work about a month ago when I tried it, but it works now. Most of proton GE versions work as well. The framerate issues persist between all versions.
I've been able to run the game and get audio just fine, however there is a black screen that renders the game unplayable.
tried switching between a bunch of diff proton versions, but none could get passed black screen

Black screen
Using multiple launch options didn't fix the issue
It's playable but not enjoyable.
It's like 8 fps In most places. It's only the main area and the very beginning where it runs okay.
Randomly the game needs to be restarted, else... a severe FPS penalty would be applied. And I mean like 1 fps, doesn't matter if it is a menu or any other scene. The problem persists until restart. i.e. entering the map is likely to initiate this issue.
It just runs without any issues, almost as a native game

Doesn't start
With Proton 5.0.9 it doesn't start. I had to use Proton 4.11 to make it work.

There are refresh rate issues. Also, Steam overlay doesn't work. Both problems persist across all versions of Proton.

No problems, works great

Everything seems to be working.

Has to be ran with the index.html file found within /home/[username]/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Learn Japanese To Survive! Katakana War/www/index.html

While launching from Steam results in a CTD, running ./www/index.html from the game's main directory will allow it to run perfectly inside FIrefox.

Launches momentarily in window; fails to start. Game is javascript-based, so able to launch by opening "~/../steam/steamapps/common/Learn Japanese To Survive! Katakana War/www/index.html" in FireFox. But does not launch in Steam.

Works perfectly
