Game ran fine out of the box, no fiddling with config files. Default proton on Ubuntu 20.04 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 graphics card.
I was able to download player created content, but I did not try multiplayer.
No issues found
Very low FPS in gameplay
In gameplay, probably due to slow fps
Gameplay getting around 4fps. In menus it's fine. tried different settings and proton, always about 4fps.
Installed without any modification of files. no issues at all

Game runs perfectly AFTER you created-edited options.txt file
Follow @grandmastermoth's instructions below. Basically, the game will not run or silently crash on start, since it's init script does not detect your directory or monitor resolution - nor sets a default.
Before creating or editing the file, click on play once, so SteamPlay is installing IT's Proton directory structure and files for this game. THEN just go to the pfx-directory of this game and you can either safely replace the option.txt with randmastermoth's pastebin version... OR - the minimum - is just to set RezX and RezY values.
As mentioned, this method works for many, many Matrix/Slitherine games.
Game itself then runs smooth as butter. All bugs and framerate issues are related to the game or game-engine itself - not Proton.

Same as others have reported. You need to create an OPTIONS.txt file in ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/502370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/SANCTUS/OPTIONS.txt
My content of that file is https://pastebin.com/iJh7MGAq (the previous user had spanish language activated, this one will set you up for english).
Apart from this fix, it runs perfectly. A little slow on my Intel HD620, but everything is rendering fine. Going to test this later on my GTX1070. Seems like a fun game. I completed and finished the tutorial.

Crashes after Video. Message: ""Failed to create device for rendering. Invalid resolution, or cannot run without at least shader model 3.0 (0)". Works on same system booted to Windows 10"

Initially game crashed with The launcher starts but the games crashes. "Failed to create device for rendering. Invalid resolution or cannot run without at least shader model 3.0 (0)'. To fix that one need to apply fix described in https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=30764 1. Go to <steam-library</steamapps/compatdata/502370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/SANCTUS. Open OPTIONS.TXT. 3. Change RezX to your horizontal resolution (mine is RezX 1920). 4. Change RezY to your vertical resolution (mine is RezX 1080). 5. Change Fullscreen to 0. After that the game can be run. I hadn't observed any issues, although it was my first play ever. If you don't find an OPTIONS.TXT where it should be, just create it and paste in the content from here: https://pastebin.com/RzYeqSCN. This fix seems to work for many Slitherine made wargames.

Crashes while loading, black screen.
