Use Luxtorpeda and select GZDoom. Plays perfectly with gamepad controls, after a few tweaks to game options like vertical aim sensitivity.

I didn't try this one out the box, but as with all DOOM-clones, there's really no reason not to use a source port, like GZDOOM for example.

Game runs perfectly out of the box, suitable for a vanilla experience but graphics will be a bit blurred on higher resolutions (dosbox problem). Use source ports for a native, improved experience.

If you're using Crispy Heretic, switch this to "Proton Hotfix" and have it on the internal drive.
On Proton Expirimental. It has works then automatically closes issue.
Made my own
A lot of work needed for the thumbsticks to even be right in game. For example, Look up and look Down are key binds... so you'll have to map them to thumb stick up & thumbstick down, and map the center view screen to the right thumbstick click.
From there, it's anyone's guess how you wanna go about this. from what I can remember, there isn't a keybind for next weapon, all weapons were bound using numbers 1-10.. You're going to have to get creative to get all of these in the game..
Happy to report that now as of proton 7, this game is working flawlessly out of the box and even with gzdoom applied
Proton version 7.0-1

Wasn't able to play it with any version of Proton
Proton 3.16-9 was the ONLY one that booted the game, and still, it was unplayable and crashed seconds later, with DOSBox error "transfer stack overflow on interrupt 08h..."

No comments. It just works.

Runs perfectly

No noticeable issues. Uses DosBox too
