Run "protontricks --gui" Select prefix for game (21680) Run an arbitrary executable In the File Open prompt, navigate to the "PhysX_9.10.0513_SystemSoftware.exe" file Run it and follow the prompts to install Exit protontricks
This game requires a specific version of PhysX (9.10.0513) that you can download directly from the Nvidia website and install through the protontricks GUI (couldn't get it to work via CLI). Once you install this PhysX package and add the launch option string, the game will launch. Using "proton-ge-custom" there are no audio or video artefacts like crackling - it runs as smoothly as it did when it was first released.
After exiting the game and relaunching, the "Continue" menu item is gone. All progress is lost.

I had a hard time getting the game to start, even following guides and then it stopped working the next time I tried to launch.
I had to attached a keyboard to get past user agreement.
Getting the game to work seems to be hit or miss, it took me several installs to get the game to even run and then I had to install Physx drivers that also took a few attempts to install properly. I got the game to run once and after that it just wouldn't launch again and it really wasn't worth the trouble to try and get the game running again.

Claw and shoot to different buttons depending on the day.
Just use GE-Proton7-24, let it install everything it needs and don't rush to shut it down if the Steam loading logo goes on for seemingly too long upon first startup. The game really works flawlessly for me without any audio or graphics issues. Controls can be a bit bothersome but it's nothing some minor tinkering can't fix. Have fun and remember Lincoln's words: "No jump and a bionic grappling hook arm is a puzzle and a dance. Link's scuttling hop for a jump in BoTW is just sad."

Followed the steps on a Steam Guide
Running the steps in the guide worked great.

With experimental physx gets installed, you just need to add the custom command

it will fail to install properly
you need to install physx as an executable:
protontricks --no-background-wineserver 21680 shell
reset
wine ~/Downloads/PhysX_9.10.0513_SystemSoftware.exe
###click on yes when prompted (you will need a GUI to install it)
Booting issues fixed as of listed version, and GE specifically improves the sound significantly, removing the residual static from the audio that was observed before. Also boots with Experimental, but audio issues persist there atm.
'Just werks' with Proton-GE now.

With Proton-GE7-26 there's no need to install physX with proton-tricks but audio does not work either way.
No audio plays
physx
Very subtle, noticeable in menus, but not disturbingly so.
ProtonGE 7-21 and up, and current experimentals (as of 2022/07/13) doesn't boot, but GE 7-20 and back will. If necessary, install physx
. Recommend using a modified executable if you have a substantial amount of cores (>=12) and run at less than 4K for best results (vanilla game bugs).

To fix the missing Physx ageia:
- Force compatibility with GE-Proton7-24 and start the game. Physx ageia will be installed but the game won’t start.
- Force compatibility with 7.0-3 instead of GE-Proton7-24 and start the game. Now the game will start properly.

requires physx
Check other reports how to use protontricks for physx
Game appears to run just like it would on Windows other than the audio buzz every once and a while.
taskset -c 0-14 %command%
I was able to get it working using the GUI version of protontricks. I selected the game then chose default wineprefix, then install a dll, then added physx. Also had to add the launch option taskset -c 0-14 %command%
Still has the weird audio buzz sometimes but otherwise appears to work just fine.
There is a light audio buzz every once and a while when using the menus.
I did delete the games prefix folder before i did this fix just incase I borked something while I was fiddling with other methods. The folder i deleted was the 21680 folder in Steam > steamapps > compatdata > 21680. Then opened the game to get it to recreate the folder before doing the above fixes.
Unplayable currently
The game won't start unless you enter the following command in the terminal:
protontricks 21680 physx
Like Bionic Commando '09, there's a noticeable buzzing/crackling sound in the background that seems to vary in intensity depending on the other sounds playing. It's not as bad in this game though, and it never gets annoying. All other audio is fine.

It works with some tweaking
- Install pipx (or any other installer for the latest protontricks. Using version 1.6.2 for this report) then install protontricks. Make sure the protontricks command runs on its own (e.g. displays the command usage) at a terminal before continuing. It should be present in your $PATH after install or opening a new terminal. Should be automatically but you can also add the command to your path manually if it doesn't work for some reason.
- pipx install protontricks 2b [optional]) pipx upgrade protontricks 3 [probably optional]) cd ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/21680/pfx/
- WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/21680/pfx/ protontricks 21680 -f physx
- [from the Steam UI] RightClick->Properties
- Set Launch Options to: taskset -c 0-3 %command%
- Now you can click the game name from Steam and it will run without crashing
I had 2 Issues.
- along with everyone else I needed to install physx
protontricks 21680 physx
- It wouldn't launch on my computer, no splash screen was shown. Restricting the game to less than 16 cor's seems to fix this. To do this I modified the launch options to be the following.
taskset -c 0-14 %command%
Works fine after installing PhysX. Open the terminal and execute the command below: WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/21680/pfx/ winetricks physx
For some reason, the sound crackling using Proton 5 (or higher). To solve this, just use Proton 4 (or lower).

protontricks 21680 physx
Couldn't escape from windowed mode. Fullscreen was fine.
Couldn't seem to control the game with mouse and keyboard. Controller worked fine.
Title screen briefly flashed but then disappeared. That's as far as i got.

needed to install physx separately using protontricks:
protontricks 21680 physx

Works fine once you install Physx. Run this on the command line: WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/21680/pfx/ winetricks physx

I get an error that syas I need an up to date version of Ageia PhysX and associated DLLs. Please install latest PhysX runtime

Requires winetricks physx installed to game prefix in order to launch (...steamapps/compatdata/21680/pfx/). Frame pacing seems uneven, but otherwise perfectly playable. Full xinput controller support.

Followed instructions and advise to install PhysX but no success

Use ProtonTricks to install physx and then it runs perfectly.

Wont start without physx. Works flawless after installing physx with winetricks.

Boots to splash screen and then immediately closes.
