Daggerfall unity
- I haven't tested vanilla. To install daggefall unity, I followed this guide https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3035819866
- But I extracted unity to a different location instead of common/The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall.
- Below is the install for daggerfall unity.
- Click on the bold text. Scroll to the bottom, in assets , click on linux 64 bit
7z x dfu_linux_64bit-v1.1.1.zip
- Open konsole where the zip file is and run ^
- This is how I extracted it using p7zip but you might have a better way
To use steam to run daggerfall unity
- Right click on DaggerfallUnity.x86_64 and click copy location. Paste this in the steam launch options in the format of ( remember double quotes ):
- "PATH TO DAGGERFALL UNITY FOLDER/DaggerfallUnity.x86_64" %command%
To find daggerfall when running unity:
- /home/USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall/DF/DAGGER/

fullscreen needs adaptive sync disabled in kde settings.
game runs flawlessly in vanilla and in daggerfall unity port with mods

Use Daggerfall Unity for a better experience

Maybe the vanilla version works with Boxtron. But unless you have extreme nostalgia for the original version you don't want vanilla, it's clunky, a pain to control and if it's your first play through you're going to quit before you even leave the tutorial dungeon.
What you want is Daggerfall Unity, which is an engine rebuild with quality of life improvements, a lot of options like controller support, click to attack, smaller dungeons, and mod support. DFU has a native Linux version you can get from their webpage, which directs you to their GitHub. I see from other reviews, Luxtorpeda does this automatically. I personally installed it directly and changed the game's target directory to it within Steam. But I am sure Luxorpeda all this in less steps. Modding this game is easy, you basically create a mod folder inside the DFU directory and drag and drop mods into it and inside the DFU menu that shows each time you start the game, you just enable the mods and DFU will automatically adjust the mod priority if you allow it to, and personally I never had an issue with DFU doing it. (The website has documents if you're having issues.) At the very bare minimum, you'll want the DREAM mod which enhances the visuals even more, DREAM's nexus page recommends some other QoL mods which I also recommend. The rest is personal preference.

Won't launch from Steam launcher
I was able to install the gog version of this game from Lutris and Heroic Games Launcher. I was able to run the game when launching the Lutris installation from my Steam Library in desktop mode. However, when I tried to launch from game mode it crashed on startup.
I tried numerous proton versions, and even the suggested luxtorpeda version, and no luck. I cannot get this game to launch from the game mode launcher

Install & use Luxorpeda as a comptiblity layer from ProtonUp or manually, then select Daggerfall Unity after launching the game (should be auto-run afterwards)

I would recommend using DFU (Luxtorpeda takes care of installation, etc) and optionally DREAM (https://www.nexusmods.com/daggerfallunity/mods/5 + recommendations) since it improves the experience a lot (better graphics, stability, controls, settings, …)
Works perfectly fine

Using Daggerfall Unity transforms this from a clunky DOS game into a clunky but enjoyable Linux game with usable controls.
You may need to tweak the controls to your liking, as there aren't enough buttons on a controller to realistically map every function of the game.
I used ProtonUp-Qt to download Luxtorpeda and ran Daggerfall with Luxtorpeda. It automatically downloads Daggerfall Unity for you, and you're ready to go without any more setup outside of the Daggerfall Unity settings screen.

Daggerfall Unity allows the Daggerfall experience with some new quality of life improvements and added Mod support.
Installing Daggerfall Unity and adding it as a non Steam application. Steam install will not launch.
I created the control scheme and shared it.
Works good (no audio issues)
Played with Proton 7.0-2 (DOSbox).
Switched to force Experimental
Keeps Buggin'
Really bummed out, wanted to play really bad this game.
Runs out of the box with Proton.
Unreliable to launch, some crash/freeze-inducing pitfalls
Intro movies out of sync, audio crackling/hitching slightly in game.
Sometimes (I think when I was swapping Proton versions) saved games were gone.
Crash on startup, 50% of the times (all standard Protons tested, 3.7-8 to 7.0-2). Could never launch with Boxtron. Freeze on black screen if the title movie is skipped. 100% crash on trying to bind some keys, for ex "<" (crashed with error 114 and leads to a Bethesda crash handler screen).
Shift+Tab (the Steam in-game menu) slows the game down to 0fps, solved by pressing the Windows key and refocusing the game. Saving the game locks you out of mouse-view-mode, loading the same game solves that.
Launches unreliably.
The intro movies were slightly desynced.
Crashes at startup, but not reliably. Tried Proton versions from 3.7-8 and up to 7.0-2. They all crashed on startup often (50% perhaps, noticed no pattern in the end), on both Windowed and Fullscreen. Could never get it started with Boxtron.
Skipping the title movie (Bethesda, Daggerfall) usually leads to a black screen.
My tests so far only include starting a new game and turning around in the tutorial cavern.

Proton 7.0-2 crashed for me on startup. Boxtron works. The videos are also playing!
