seems to be worse under vulkan
game would go into a black screen with directX and would crash after initial video with vulkan under both proton 8.0-2 and 7.0-6, however i then started it with 5.13-6 and it shown a new window after initial video asking if i wanted which driver to use (DirectDraw or Vodoo Glide) i picked Direct draw and my graphics card instead of Microsoft Direct draw thing (i cant open it again to see what exactly the options were) after this it works properly except for the audio and i could even switch back any proton version
i'd recomend going into the Controller layout tool (which is actually where you change graphics settings but is misslabeled) and switching aspect ratio to preserve original. the game creates two audio streams under pulse audio, one is the music and the other one is the game audio, i think music used to go away on the original game, so i muted it.

tl;dr: Emulate a 1024x768 Desktop
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Add the game to Steam.
- Open the game Properties.
- Select the Compatibility tab.
- Enable "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and select any recent Proton version.
- Start the game. It wlll crash with a modal dialog stating "Received error number 2 from Vertigo", because 1280x800 resolution is not supported. This creates the WINE/Proton configuration for the game.
- Install
Protontricks
using the Discovery software center. - Run
Protontricks
and select the "Non-steam shortcut: Dethkarz.exe". - Run
winecfg
in the Dethkarz WINE/Proton configuration and select the default configuration. - Select the Graphics tab.
- Enable "Emulate a Virtual desktop" and set the "Desktop size" resolution 1024x768.
- Click the "OK" button, then close
Protontricks
. - Go back to Steam and run the game.
- Set the in-game resolution to 1024x768.
Game on
Game does not support 1280x800 and must be run at 1024x768. It is windowed in Desktop mode and has black bars in Gaming mode.
As others have said. Flawless, worked straight out of the box
Runs out of the box.

Runs great out of the box, the issues mentioned are most likely not Proton related.
Transparency on smoke effects sometimes renders incorrectly as a transparent square instead of the intended smoke. This seems to be somewhat depended on how far the smoke is away and might be a general issue of Deathkarz being a old game and not necessarily a Proton issue
It has a couple of slowdowns in some places (maxed out render distance), however I doubt that it the fault of Proton as I remember about the same slowdowns no matter what Hardware I ran it on back in the day. I suspect these are a issue of the games Engine.

Running out of the Box
I play on 3840x2160 and sometimes have a FPS break-in.
