With the current version of proton, the game is not able to load properly past the main menu.
Tinker Steps:Custom Proton: GE-Proton8-1
I had no issues and was able to play the game perfectly fine after switching to GE-Proton-8-1.

As stated by others below, the game would crash on the first boss. This was completely fixed however with protontricks and I have not encountered any issues since.
