Just needed the `-dx9` launch option and now it's great, even multiplayer!

Customizations:

Works great but had to add -dx9 to the launch options to get it to run, otherwise I got the "unhandled exception trapped" error described by some below. Must have something to do with my older GPU needing DirectX9.
