Download the game !!! don't start it !!! -> open the gamefiles (properties -> local files -> browse local files) -> remove the folder Dependencies -> use protontricks 63710 d3dcompiler_43 d3dx9_43 ... have fun playing | removing dependencies removes the openal installer which breaks sound and the 2 directx 9 components are needed if you want to play the latest available version and not the opengl one
Guide: a.) Download game !! don't start !! b.) go to game folder (properties -> local files -> browse local files) and delete folder dependencies c.) start game once (let it fail but the prefix is created) d.) install with winetricks or protontricks d3dx9_43 d3dcompiler_43
Since 4.11-2 the windows version in proton launches without any additional tweaks on my system. So i prefer this one over the native because of the lack of features.
