I needed to switch from windowed to full and reboot my PC.
after the intial lag and artiufacts performance is the same as Windows.
minor artifacts and lag when first loading in - after a few online games this stops.
out of the box with Proton 6
you would get into the game just to not be able to finish it due to the crash, very frustrating.
the game runs perfectly until you get to the restricted zone, then it crashes without fail. I tried with multiple playthroughs and versions of proton.
using the righ proton version this is enjoyable but make sure to save regulalry and enable auto save.

I initially tried with proton 7 and then experiemtnal both crashed after loading the map for fast travel, 6.3-8 worked perfectly.
use graphics settings at high rather than max, use proton 6, and have auto save on then all is good. works just as good as windows but is slightly unstable expect the occasional crash.

Set VSYNC to ON and frame limit to 144 for my 144Hz monitor - this fixed the map/tab menu crashing.
Works without a fuss, no customisation needed.
matchmaking was quick, gameplay weas stable, it was no different than running on Windows
no issues at any stage - I expected problems and was glad to be wrong. nice to have a decent PVP game on Linux that runs and is not dead!
the stuttering is hard to look past - I expect thsi on proton when intially spawning but on every cut scene, fight, etc. not good.
changed the Origin folder in the steam folder to 555 read only after seeing intelligent gamings tutorial on youtube.
stuttering was present throughout - contrary to other reports mine worked best on max FPS and quality with the read only fix
This game works, unfortunately not well enough and I really want it to but I have to be honest especially if I had just bought this game I would spin up a VM or login to Windows (dual boot) purely on the basis that the stuttering impacts cutscenes and combat to a point where you can die easily and miss important story details as well as action sequences in the scenes. for now this will be one of my "for crying out loud, time to load Windows" games. I am hopeful the next Proton release will have the stuttering resolved.
updated form my previous report this game is now not only playable it is enjoyable on Linux and woreks on high graphics at 144FPS limit....

Controller would not be redetected if it disconnected during gameplay.
framerate occasionally drops below 30FPS but more often sts between 80-120FPS
played on high settings with 144FPS limit - nearly flawless occasional FPS drop
I recommend if you are on an Ubuntu based distro switching to Proton 6.3-8 the game runs absolutely perfectly given this change. no issues in my experience at all.
the game runs well though my playtime was not logged correctly through steam I played for lonmger than my account shows.
Proton 6.3-8
initially on startup moving the FPS view had lag.
I had a relatively short play but right after forcing proton 6.3-8 on Pop OS 22.04 the game ran, it did not run on experimental which is my default. no issues at all after startign the game apart from two seconds of lag when moving the mouse at the very start. all in all worth a go and I may update after longer playtime.
