Capped at 30 fps default, this game works right on install.
First things: adjust your resolution, kill vsync, and use choke to throttle to 60fps for a better time. Other than that it works as is.
Works after adjustment
Using "Proton Experimental". Installed the game like normal. When I tried to launch, I got an error about PhysX not being installed. I installed protontricks (https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks) as well as winetricks ("sudo apt install winetricks"). I then used "protontricks 24980 physx" to install PhysX to ME2's prefix. Accepted the agreement for PhysX install, and launched the game. Played through the first mission with no problems. Hopefully this will take care of the PhysX issue if you have it. As far as i can tell, it's the only problem (so far).

It seems like there should be an optional dependency added to the WINE ppa to automatically add the stupid wmp11 installation by default. That way it could be installed and just run out of the box. Because once you take care of this little (annoying) detail, the game works great.
Not a pick up and play experience. Tinkering is required. Typical gamers aren't going to have the patience.
Slightly more consistent framerate over default.
Proton Experimental
Compared to the recommended requirements my hardware should have no problem at high graphics settings. Even with a compatibility layer.
Personally could not get the wmp11 installed via winetricks because the domain where the required files are located is incredibly slow. The downloader misses the retry attempts and quits, thus having to re-download the files again and again. If the movie files are replaced with the comment-linked mediafire ones, the game WILL launch and play.
