Proton GE plus FSR launch options greatly improved the performance; better than on Windows.

For me it ran pretty much the same as on Windows with un-tinkered default Proton, but I'd definitely recommend using Proton GE plus the launch options above for that boost, since GTA IV never really ran well on PC to begin with.
Game appears to require GLIBC_2.38 which my distro (LMDE 6) does not have
This can be observed when trying to run "Game.Game" in the game folder from the command line. Otherwise, when launching the game from Steam, nothing appears to happen at all. Pretty unfortunate that there is a native Linux version of this game but that I can't even run it on a fully-updated and actively-maintained distribution. Would need to wait for an OS version upgrade for a glibc upgrade.
While this seems to work well for most people, for me it's completely unplayable on Linux.
Runs far worse than on Windows, ~15 fps on max settings instead of 250+ fps.
Game freezes irrecoverably upon taking a few steps in the first level.
This set of symptoms happened with Proton 7 and 8, Experimental, and Proton GE 8.

Had to use launch options to prevent black squares from appearing all over the screen
Game would freeze after the end of the 2nd day, I assume it's an error relating to playing some sort of intro movie. I ticked the "don't play movies" settings in the game's settings, in System->System->Launch System Config->Compatibility, and then I could continue.
