It seems like it wanted to load the savegames from my .config dir for some reason, so I created a symlink to fix this: ln -s ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1733060/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/evercats/ ~/.config/evercats
I have no clue why the saves didn't work for me (why doesn't it try to load the savegames in the protonprefix?), all the rest of the game worked perfectly fine and it seems like the old reports didn't have issues with their savegames. So I would say it works fine out of the box, but if you do notice issues with saving (it will spit an error in game), try to fix it by creating the symlink. It worked just like on Windows after doing that.
Swapped to Proton 8 like is mentioned in the recommended system requirements for SteamDeck.
I didn't try a different version, but it basically works out of the box on Proton 8.
Feels like a native game
On initial launch the fullscreen option didn't seem to do anything, but after changing the resolution away from the default it worked perfectly fine, so I see this as a non-issue. I played this on Proton Experimental (which is my default), but I also quickly tried it on the default Proton version as well and I didn't notice any differences.
Overall it worked really well and I was able to go through the whole game without issue.
