The game doesn't recognize an external controller unless you re-arrange controllers using the Steam menu placing the controller SECOND after the Steam Deck itself. Steam Deck controls work find without tinkering.
The game doesn't recognize input from an external controller (DS4 in this case), unless it's listed SECOND in the Steam controller order menu. Steam defaults external controllers to first slot, so each time I started the game while docked I had to re-arrange the controllers.
