The game's launcher that allows you to choose between Classic or Definitive Edition requires a recent version of .NET to work, causing fresh installations of the game to be unplayable. Other posts will mention at least one of two solutions to this. The solution that moves files and creates symbolic links will bypass the launcher, causing Steam to start the Definitive Edition of the game directly. This removes the .NET requirement, but doesn't allow launching the Classic Edition, and it must be reapplied whenever the game updates. The solution that involves installing dotnet472 with winetricks will allow the launcher to work as intended, but this seems to require using winetricks version 20181203 specifically, and will not work with newer or older versions. No matter the solution used, Steam will waste time trying to install .NET again every time the game is launched. In-game, I noticed two issues: The game often fails to generate thumbnails when saving, causing many of my saves to just show blackness in the area where the thumbnails should be, and the Fake Fullscreen mode in the options causes me severe problems with focus when alt-tabbing.
Proton 4.11 did not change the steps required to run the game, nor did it fix the issues with alt-tabbing from Fake Fullscreen mode.
gamescope --fullscreen --force-grab-cursor --steam -w 1920 -W 1920 -h 1080 -H 1080 -- %command%
Voicelines from my champion occasionally stutter or are cut off. No other audio issues.
No worse than on Windows. (Matchmaking is quirky and netcode is flawed, but this is also the norm on Windows)
(Non-tinker is only not recommended if you have more than one monitor!)
Ever since a recent update, having the wrong mouse input mode in the settings no longer causes crashes.
I needed to use gamescope in the launch options to make the game play nice with multiple monitors on Plasma 5 Wayland. (the resolution-related parameters can be changed to suit your own monitor.)
Specifically, gamescope stops the mouse cursor from leaving the game window without an alt-tab. This is important because the game unlocks the cursor from the game window whenever your champion is dead during a match, only to re-lock it as soon as you respawn. In most modes, you only stay dead for a few seconds, during which you can easily move your mouse to another monitor by accident.
If your mouse isn't over the game when you respawn, the game will fail to re-lock the mouse correctly, causing lots of problems. (Not just the mouse cursor becoming capable of leaving the window while you're trying to aim in a fight, but also this caused the mouse cursor to become invisible in all of the game's menus!)
Also the default graphics options are stupid and caused bad framerates out of the box; definitely change them before you play
Got BetterSADX to work, but BetterSADX requires PROTON_USE_WINED3D to not crash.
With BetterSADX, winetricks quartz is required to avoid freezes when prerendered cutscenes play (such as after the Sega logo). BetterSADX also needs a dll override for d3d8.dll.
