It worked out of the box but I feel like the next nvidia update will help. The game is a bit choppy on my 970m running on low settings. It feels the same regardless of medium or high.
It runs great but for some reason it would not launch, even using different proton versions, unless steam overlay was disabled.
Disable steam overlay
Black screen, Crash on launch. Fixed by disabling steam overlay
I had to use Proton 4.11-13
The game installed fine and the launcher started as well with 5.0-9, however I was unable to log in inside the launcher in order to finish downloading patches. I received this error:
This service account does not have a valid FINAL FANTASY XIV license for this platform or your subscription has expired. To register a license, please visit the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Mog Station (https://sqex.to/Msp).
Doing some digging on the FFXIV subreddit, I found a link to this article:

After using Proton 4.11-13, I was finally able to login and begin downloading the patches for the game. I will update once I have the patches downloaded and the game is up and running.
Had to select a different version of proton in order for the launcher to update the game
I had to run the game with Proton 4.11-13 because the launcher would not download patches.
Had to tinker to get it to work
The game froze at startup for me.
As another user mentioned, go to the games properties and check "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool."
Next select Steam Linux Runtime.
Voila. You're set.
Ran great out of the box. I VERY seldom saw a graphical glitch where part of the terrain would not load for a split second. Almost didn't notice it. Otherwise played perfectly.
This game booted and ran perfectly with no hiccups.
This is a unity game, which i have had some trouble with in the past on previous versions of Proton. This game runs just fine though.
