Latest proton (9/Hotfix) was playable but giving occasional crashes/freezes. It was working well on Proton 8 but I realized one day some of the textures were quite blurry and this seems to be an intermittent issues when sometimes textures are randomly low-res, noticeable on the compass and the load on your truck. Proton 7 fixed both of the above, so far.
No music
No music at all
Mouse control in-game not enabled by default but can be enabled with .ini file
Mouse cursor slow and jerky
No midi music. Midi music works ok in other dosbox games from steam so this issue is specific to this game, or the way that Steam has configured dosbox for it. I couldn't really find any hints online for how to solve it. I refunded the game as I don't really feel like playing it with no music.
The mouse cursor is jerky in menu and mouse control is poor, but I can't remember if that was an issue with the original game or not.
I haven't tried the 2015 release but it has a poor reputation and is why I didn't choose it in the first place.
Doesn't seem able to find where the genuine game is installed on Linux
Game complained it could not find my RTCW install. Said that pak0.pk3 wasn't found, and to make sure it's in the correct location, except it doesn't specify where this is. The online FAQ for this mod says this is probably because I don't have a genuine copy of the game (I do, they are both installed via Steam). Could not find out where it was looking by running steam from console. So, I've hit a dead end I guess. I use Proton 7.0-2 from Steam
PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
The fact it's a console port sticks out, it often refers to the "A" button, "B" button, "Y" button etc even though the default keyboard mapping has "S" as the "A" button, "A" as the "B" button (I think) and so on. It's very confusing.
Gameplay good - it was stuttery without these command line options which is why I added them, just based on most other reports. I tried the "directx 11 fix" first and that didn't work at all. These ones are fine though.
