Gameplay will not start if you have too many cores. You need to limit the number of cores with taskset -c in the launch options (my other tinkering steps - gamemoderun, Glorious eggroll - are likely not needed)
Probably works fine with typical CPUs with fewer cores, but crashing ingame but not in menus was really unexpected

Tried with various Proton versions, including glorious eggroll, and with env variables suggested in other comments such as PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 - no chance.

splash screen, unreal video, runestorm video, main menu, 5 seconds (in which you are free to do whatever), crash.
