The aim here is stable 30 fps + reasonable graphical fidelity and at least 2 h of battery life. The configuration presented below mosty achives that goal, allthough not in 100% - there WILL be certain fps dips in the later game (zooming in on the strategic map with lots of animated objects revealed, larger battles) but that doesn't hinder my enjoyment of this great game.
Steam AoW4 Settings:
- Properties>Game Resolution 1024x640
- "Set resolution for internal and external display" enabled
In-game "Graphics Settings":
- Borderless, Render Scale 100%,
- Vsync, Soft Particles, Reflections, Volumetric Lightning: off
- Texture Quality: high
- Anti-aliasing: MSAAx4
- everything else: low
Quickmenu (Performance tab):
- Frame Limit: 30 fps (60 Hz)
- TDP Limit: 14 W
- Scaling Mode: Stretch
- Scaling Filter: FSR (Sharpness 5)
Battery life - approximately 2,5 h
In addition to my first report: after many more hours with the game, i decided to change some of my previous settings. I've settled on the ones i described in the first report with the following corrections:
TDP Limit - off and In game Settings (graphics):
- Limit background performance: on
- Texture quality: medium
- Animation quality: low
- SSAO Quality: off
- Bloom: off (the same goes with all other options witch checkboxes - Soft Particles etc.)
And one more VERY important thing - in order to prevent regular, severe fps drops in battles, be sure to turn off the "Auto Save" option (in game Settings - Main)!
With 40/40 setting and Beautiful video preset (second highest) i'm getting almost 4,5 h of battery life. With my time with the game (30+ hours) I have not encountered any bugs at all. Controls are easily adjusted - i created a custom keyboard/mouse layout (left trackpad - radial menu with icons; righ trackpad - mouse; lef joystick - camera movement; right joystick - zoom in/out and menu scrolling) and i'm really satisfied with it, please feel free to try it out!
In addition to my previous report: i'm using Proton 8 and my control layout is named smth like "K&M modified" (my user name is "wojk1"). It also includes Magnifier Glass under R4 button, although i haven't been using it much.
GOG version of the game launched via Heroic. At first, the game was totally unplayable - constant crashes, crackling audio and insanly fast map scrolling. All of those problems vanished after one change. When you open Fantasy General window in Heroic (in desktop mode) you have 3 options = 1. Launch Options; 2. Fantasy General; 3. Graphic Mode Setup. Choose the last one and than in "Basic Settings" set "Graphic Mode" to OpenGL. Save Settings. Problem solved. I also changed game resolution to 1280x720 ("Advanced Settings", "Window Resolution") in orded to force full screen display via Stretch scaling mode from the Steamdeck's Quickmenu.
