Using the default settings, the game does not fit the entire screen, I have to set a virtual desktop using Q4Wine and it works normally, Proton definitely needs an option to set a virtual desktop inside Steam, this is a good solution for a lot of games, a lot of them have problems with ALT + TAB, including this one, they get a black screen after switch and back to the game, this is fixed with a virtual desktop as well.
I use this options to run the game, the first fix the audio latency, the second enable D9VK and the third fix some random crashes, it gets a lot of crashes without it. The game runs like a native now, better than Windows indeed (it has screen tearing there, but there is no tearing on Linux).
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 PROTON_USE_D9VK=true PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
I install the Enhanced Edition, do not play this game without it.
Not all the audio crack, only the voices of NPCs, and you can hear only when near them
I also install a custom launcher, it substitutes the gta-sa.exe file and opens a window to choose between offline mode, MTA or SAMP, and count hours on Steam, just like the original game. The downgrade to version 1 changes the executable from gta-sa.exe to gta_sa.exe, the launcher runs this new executable or the ones from multiplayers, you have to create a symlink if you don't use this launcher.
The only two problems are that the voices of NPCs crack a little when you are near them, and the audio configuration screen does not show up, the screen becomes black. Another little problem is that with Proton 5.0-9 the videos on startup does not run, you have to skip twice in order to continue, these bugs are fixed using Proton GE 5.9, but is not necessary, to use it.
The game runs fine, but the cut scenes doesn't, neither video nor audio plays.
I created a new report because I don't know if is possible to edit one. I played this game for 28 hours and finished it, the only problem is the cut scenes that don't play, but only video cut scenes, not in-game rendered ones, I forgot to say that in my first report. Because of this problem, sometimes you will get a back screen and nothing will happen (when the game starts for example), just press space or esc to skip the cut scene. These videos are playable through a video player directly on Linux, but not inside wine prefix when you are playing, they are inside the folder "data/FMV"
