I mean once I had my nvidia drivers up to date (including the usual nonsense of touching nvidia drivers), it's just launch + play.

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, ensure you are using a current driver (not the 470xx-line for legacy cards). I had to upgrade my nvidia drivers from this line to the modern 530ish line, as AoW4 requires Proton 8+, but Proton 8+ requires Vulkan 1.3, and the 470xx-line of drivers does not provide Vulkan 1.3
