Bust...
I can install the game using Steam Beta, but no Proton selection allows the game to begin launching.
Perhaps not /that/ much of a loss. If the game wasn't part of a "free" (included in laptop purchase) "bundle", I'd feel a bit ripped off. This game has a decent concept, but it's poorly executed and quite boring.
Launcher starts game, but then OOM
Beta Steam was required. With Proton < 4.11, the launcher could not be installed. With 4.11 and beyond (one exception), the launcher was installed, but launching the game seemed to fail/crash.
With Proton 5.0-rdr2-4, the launcher was able to kick off the game (the kill SIGSTOP/SIGCONT hack was required). I was then able to see the smoke screen and the shotgun shells drop.
I was probably 1-2 seconds from hearing the gunshot part of the load screen before ~4 GB RAM was consumed by the game (and ~1G for the launcher and 1G everything else) and the game crashed with the message: ~"RDR2 exited unexpectedly: Out of memory. [...]"
According to someone who looked at my proton log, they said, "looks like your proton is happily failing." Unfortunately, I have no clue how to debug this further.
Potentially fixed with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60; not tested.
Minor glitches; potentially from low fps, but nothing that impacted gameplay.
Proton 5.0-rdr2-4 is required. The "-vulkan" option should definitely be passed. I also needed to add "-width 1920 -height 1080". Adding "-borderless" was also nice. There was some audio crackling that could potentially be fixed with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60, but the problem was infrequent enough that the option hasn't been tested.
My full potential command... PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command -width 1920 -height 1080 -borderless -vulkan
