Proton 7.0 appears to make this game completely playable.
Up until now, the only version of Proton I could use with any sort of success was 4.11, but would still experience random crashing on the login screen, as well as occasionally in-game. Trying it out with 7.0 I have not experienced any crashing. I haven't played this on Windows recently, so I can't speak to any performance degradation while playing under Proton; however even on my older, mid-range hardware, I can play the game just fine at low-medium settings.
At the moment, given the frequent random crashes, I can't recommend playing through Proton. I will update this if it changes.
It seems like every other major update to RuneScape breaks Proton compatibility. For the last six months or so, it's worked great on Proton 7.0.x, but for the past couple of weeks I've run into the same constant random crashes I used to experience.
If only they'd add Steam integration with their (already existing) Linux client... The native Linux client works great, why can't they just incorporate this directly into Steam???
