From a terminal prompt: sudo su; enter password; paste the command: echo "vm.max_map_count=16777216" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
From Cinnamon menu: Turn-off "Effects"
On Mint, and this is my update after weeks of play: with the two steps noted above I have had no more occasional screen-freeze crashes!
