Use "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1" command to fix frequent crashes that occur at random if using Proton
Using Proton fixes a bug related to controller input- the game will pick up the garbage inputs from a Nintendo Pro/8bitdo controller using Steam Input- Even if controller support is disabled.
If you don't have or need a controller plugged in, native version should suffice. Performance is similar across the board
Crashing makes playing through the demo impossible (probably will be solved by full release)
Will crash on entering a level loading screen (such as from the front door of Moth & Flame)
Will require MF for videos to work, any recent Glorious Eggroll release seems to work fine
6.18-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Glorious Eggroll for FMV cutscenes
I do not know what was causing the earlier crashes, but game runs smoothly now. I assume it was something on my end. Load times may be longer than they are on native; can't test atm.
Proton-6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.10-GE-1
Game will crash when entering fight from VS. menus (does not happen on Tutorial fight)
As it is, MF issues persist on default out-of-the-box Proton e.g., video is non-functional on VS. menus but a crash occurs when fight start on VS. Menus regardless (GE-Proton for instance)
This also occurs in Arcade mode
Game otherwise works native; settings work. Fullscreen/borderless work. Fights do work (Tutorial fight). Music player works. Online may work, since there's no video BG*
*suspected issue
Fixing mfplat.dll by using a fix found for running the game on Windows 7 (requires CFF Explorer through wine (used Bottles) and replacing a a value for mfplat.dll in the game's EXE)
without mfplat.dll, opening RE Engine video would cackle. Only video with audio issues I've found
Ethan's hand would not load in the basement area (do not know if it's a common issue. Only fixed after skipping the cutscene BUT only after it plays for a few seconds; otherwise you might black screen until death)
Because of Steam Input (keyboard inputs through controller) issues with GE-Proton I cannot use it to get past MF plagued titles (RE Engine ones, mainly) REVIII doesn't work with mf-install by default; but by editing the EXE and replacing a value involving mfplat.dll- it works! Tested up to Lady D's mirror scene (the mirror is a video file)
Solid out of the box Linux/Proton support- Feels native!
It could be just like this on Windows, but cursor support for Unite Morphing feels inconsistent and doesn't draw/map well to my given input. I do not have Windows to test on, and few will probably want to play with keyboard/mouse anyway but it should be noted
Without testing on Windows am unsure of some small issues.
-Prerendered intro video looks to be integer scaled and may be smoother on Windows
-Mouse input has issues
-Escape key makes game windowed, but it's probably intentional
-Some slight visual bugs, it's inconsistent and probably intended behavior. Game can look a little rough even on the Wii U original, so likely just a carryover
Without the controller issue, is otherwise native
The game otherwise plays perfectly, but an unavoidable issue has cropped up upon further playing. The button mashing prompts that pop up during the cinematic moments in the game do not respond to input from a controller- I cannot figure out why. This can make finishing the game solely with a controller impossible. The prompts on KB/M DO work, and can be used as a work around. Remapping via Steam can solve the issue, but even then I've had issues with consistency. More testing needed
Issues with controller input during button mashing prompts
Upon further review, game has logic issues that could ruin experience
Certain prompts do not work with a controller, and mouse input is bugged
Game has several logic issues that need sorted. Multi-Unite can occasionally be bugged depending on circumstances. Unknown fully what causes it. Minor bugs, like fire particles/attacks not igniting Unite Hand also occur, if rarely. Game seems fully completable, but the logic bugs may cause problems. Enemy AI seems to suffer from this as well. Doesn't always do what would happen on Windows/Console, and can rarely lockup and not attack.
No soft locks so far as I can find
Small controller issue aside, feels like native. Again.
Mouse input does not seem to recognize 'up'. Some controllers will not respond to the mash 'b' prompt, other mash prompts work from what I can tell. Steam Controller does allow for the 'b' mash prompt, so maybe an X or D input issue?
OK, please disregard the previous review. I was testing something and the game just has these sections that are weirdly buggy if you tinker around in them. These bugs can also occur on Wii U and Windows, and probably every platform. I've played for 10-ish hours since and haven't gotten a single bug or oddity.
Game preforms as well as it should, though my lacking hardware means I'm not personally running at a smooth 60, but anyone at minium specs should be just fine.
