I'm running old hardware and playing this game on medium settings. I tried many different proton versions (including GE) and many different tinkering setups and launch options. My game version is pre-AI (1.201) and I just tried Proton Experimental with no launch options and it's the smoothest combination. Splash screen/intro video and menu background videos all play. Menu seems to crash if you hang out too long but everything else works better so it's a small price to pay. I can even alt tab out of game to other windows without it crashing which I couldn't before.

TL:DR; just use proton experimental
