Menus run at extremely low framerate. Spectated games kept freezing until my connection timed out.
I could not start a single or multi player game without a crash, all I could do was spectate, which usually led to a crash within a few minutes.
I deleted the Movies folder as recommended, no other tweaks needed to get game to launch and 'start' some modes. But out of the box is 100% broken.
Multiplayer desyncs very quickly, haven't been able to run a game
As per other reviews, had to rename the movies folder.
Borked on many debian installs
Spent about half an hour trying to get working, got refund.
Tried X and Wayland (on GNOME) with every TINKER REPORT: combination of using D3D and disabling esync and a bunch of proton versions including the latest GloriousEggroll and Experimental. Never got it to launch, but a command lasted more than a second only on Proton 5.13 - everything else just exited immediately.
I might give the mobile version a go on genymotion, but just not worth me buying at this point
I installed via wine. Full screen works fine. Had a minor input issue which may be game bug.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
gnome desktop shortcut fixed and put me into fullscreen, but mouse issues
Mouse highlighting completely off
DEMO - Installed, no display output on any proton without WINE3D launch command
PROTON_NO_D3D11= 1% command%
DEMO With command I could get the loading screen to load to completion and then got a blank screen which I had to terminate. I tried changing proton versions and using vulkan again after this "successful launch" and verifying the game's files through steam (but steam thought they w ere intact)
Demo worked fine, played through til end.

Could not get audio to work on any non-Glorious Eggroll version of proton, with or without sound=alsa
Performance was terrible with Hybrid X11 Picom compositor, GLX variant solved the problem
Ubuntu Mate (mate-desktop 1.26.0-1)
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 sound=alsa %command%
Had a nightmare with any newer version of Proton, tested extensively Proton Experimental and Glorious Eggroll 9-2 and had all sorts of graphical flickering issues when using my monitor at 85Hz (MSI PRO MP2412 via HDMI).
I tried KDE Plasma with & without compositor (much faster without compositor, but sickening flickering). I tried MATE with GLX, Hybrid and "no compositor", and stock i3.
Finally I downgraded to GE-Proton 8-21 and performance was great. No stuttering, buffer, tearing or flickering (Vsync off, Framerate uncapped, running between 99 and 130 fps).

Excellent ultrabook performance on Irus Plus Integrated Graphics
Runs great for a non-gaming laptop (Dell XPS 7300), I had most settings down and ran at custom resolution 1600x1000 with texture detail on second lowest. Consistently above 80fps. Manually running CoolerControl and set the fans to maximum whenever the CPU temp is above 50 (requires git tool 'dellfan' to disable BIOS fan control - set Coolercontrol first!)
Also used a desk fan when in menus between games etc.
Better performance than the native client used to. Out of the box only worked with DX2VK on DX9, GE works fine without launch flags on DX11.
Proton-5.6-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Using custom Proton version 'Glorious Eggroll', https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Fine out of box, note that native version will try to install. Prev report - works without launch flags on Glorious Eggroll GE 5.9-6-ST.
Some combinations have minor difficulties with fullscreen and have to use a DE keyboard shortcut to force minimize. Have played hundreds of hours on various GE versions. Briefly tested with Proton-TKG and it works.
Proton 5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll GloriousEggroll
Post launch, patches made two significant changes:
- it deselected Proton, I had to reselect my version and without checking it appeared to silently failing launch
- Steam Achievements now work.
Crash on launch with Steam Overlay enabled
Works flawlessly with Steam Overlay disabled.
If you are having trouble with mods, it's worth trying the proton version. Your experience may vary.
Currently, I cannot seem to get vanilla Rebirth working on either native or Proton, may DE exclusive.
Mods list was not entirely compatible with my Native mods list. I had to do some debugging to get it to launch, but discovered it was because I was not properly disabling mods.
It appears the game can have trouble persistently disabling mods. Fix by manually adding file 'disable.it' in individual mod folders, in my install; SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/250900/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Binding\ of\ Isaac\ Afterbirth+\ Mods/
Must change force compatibility version to Proton 7.0-6 or crashes occur, as others have mentioned when certain triggers go off, like in Mines II when collecting the sd k p**** , or at the end of the multi wave boss in Mines. Changing version got me through once, but crashes may still exist.
This Windows exclusive DLC works flawlessly on Proton much like Afterbirth+ did. Works better than Antibirth ever did.

In recent versions I have occasionally crashed when an explosion goes off. Twice in bossfights with multi-event explosions and twice in those rooms where the rocks fall cascading to make a new path. The game autosaves run progress, but not room progress, so this requires you to repeat the floor. I recommend when you get a boss which requires or triggers explosions to immediately exit to menu and then continue - this will lock an autosave to your entrance into the boss fight, then a crash will continue you from there. (Unless of course you have half a heart ;)
Excellent ultrabook performance on integrated graphics.
I had to change the "proton" version to Linux Steam Runtime 3.0 (Sniper) which required updating to Steam Beta. Default Runtime did not work, 1.0 (Scout) from memory did (doesn't require Beta to force)
Crashes on loading screen, refuses to load at all on intel integrated graphics
Could not get it to work using Steam's tools at all. Continually didn't load at all, but steam kept saying I was playing a phantom process.
I eventually got it working using Wine 4.17 via Lutris and it runs fairly well. Performance is fine graphically, loading times are very high and sometimes locks up my system, but would eventually catch up. Get a black screen with nothing but the version watermark on the character select screen, but changing characters is doable by guessing. I suspect it is using way too much CPU usage for a simple game, my system only having four threads.
If you love the game, you will enjoy it even though the performance isn't ideal. Definitely CPU heavy, but my hardware is very old.
Mouse feels delayed.. Possibly framerate related, but given the style of game I wouldn't notice framerate drops.
Loading times insane (off SSD, seems to be bottlenecking CPU). Had a couple freezes which locked up my whole system. Once it recovered, once I had to power off after an hour
As much as I love it, when I use my best hardware just for this game and it still fails me, I simply cannot recommend it to a typical gamer.
Input extremely laggy bound to framerate issues, however optimizations could separate these issues a bit.
Framerate less than 15 on Fantastic and low, 720p resolution on capable hardware
Loading times off of SSD and capable CPU extremely slow for a fairly simple 3D game.
An Edmund McMillen/ Isaac/ Rogue-Lite diehard will play it regardless and enjoy the gameplay, but running the game is simple not a good experience.
My AMD experience far trumps my Nvidia (and Intel) experience. 1080p on Beautiful was 60fps all the way.
Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF GloriousEggroll
Strangely specific issue, unless I haven't noticed more - but the only sound missing is the spinning of Stat Wheel in The Shop. Bug may be part of original
borked - with latest update I can't get it to move past the loading screen. 3D cinematic has all sorts of badly rendered graphics
Tried every combination I could think, I downloaded the old Proton-GE that worked for me previously, I tried experimental and a bunch of newer, then I tried them all on Xorg (was on Wayland). No luck, same issue every time.
Lost Expansion Borked - with v1.0.9 latest update I can't get it to move past the loading screen.
The opening 3D cinematic has all sorts of badly rendered graphics with garbled video artifacts on every surface.
TINKER: Tried every combination I could think, I downloaded the old Proton-GE that worked for me previously, I tried experimental and a bunch of newer, then I tried them all on Xorg (was on Wayland). No luck, same issue every time.
I also tried wine on Lutris which previously worked for me and still can't get past that loading screen. I tried the Beta (says 1.0.8) Also tried clearing my save folder.
Performance is worlds better than it was in older versions, no tweaks necessary.
(Fullscreened, on Xorg) Occassional issue when using spells with issues clicking the top row of the puzzle board, sometimes certain tiles (in the middle) won't work, but ones to the left and right will, sometimes this can be triggered by cancelling the spell and trying again, but with spells that only target one square it's often impossible to cast that spell.
The icon for the tile is sometimes wonky, so I assume this bug exists natively.
Save & Quit feature is broken; it just doesn't seem safe to use - again likely a bug with the base game
Every time I Alt-Tab, click or interact with another window in my DM (MATE on X) the fullscreened ufo50.exe would move back to my second monitor (listed second on xrandr, display 2 in ddcutil and not my primary monitor in my TM).
Local MP is KISS so the only factor is supporting a second gamepad
Tinker: couldn't get it into the foreground on Proton 9.0-4 (appeared briefly in taskbar then music played but no window) on AMD desktop; but on lappy (nvidia) it was fine
