3/8/2022 update borked this
NOSTEAM=1 %command%
The game worked just fine until an update the other day, now steam users can't log in at all
As long as GPU shadows is disabled the game is playable, it is completely unplayable on my hardware with GPU shadows enabled
This game seems to have frequent severe crashing issues (doesn't just crash the game, it managed to crash my whole desktop environment and blocked accessing a terminal so I had to do a full reboot) especially during cutscenes with AMD gpus, particularly Vega 56/64. Disabling "Precise GPU Shadows" in graphics settings seems to resolve the crashes
"Precise GPU Shadows" setting in graphics seems to cause crashes during cutscenes on AMD GPUs, especially Vega GPUs
Completely unplayable past the tutorial if you have the wrong combination of settings and hardware, make sure precise gpu shadows is off if you experience crashing
"Precise GPU Shadows" setting can cause sever crashes that require a hardware reboot when enabled with some gpus, mostly AMD Vega series.
With default graphics settings the game is completely unplayable on my hardware due to crashes 9/10 times a battle starts or cutscene plays. Disableing Precise GPU Shadows resolves crashing
Tinkering may not be required depending on what gpu you have, but disableing precise gpu shadows may be required for the game to be able to progress through the first non-tutorial mission
The game did not launch on my primary monitor in a multi-monitor setup by default and the in-game settings to change monitors did nothing. Forcing it to run with proton 5.12-6 resolved this issue.
Some reports have already mentioned the kde wallpaperengine plugin but haven't gone into detail about how to set it up and the instructions on the github page don't explain everything.
To get this working:
make sure you are using the kde desktop environment, if your distro doesn't use it by default you will need to install it, log out of your current desktop, select kde in the login options, and log into kde
Install wallpaper engine through steam with steam play enabled launch wallpaper engine and download some wallpapers. You will not be able to apply wallpapers to your desktop here, this is normal, just make sure you have some installed.
go to https://github.com/catsout/wallpaper-engine-kde-plugin and install the plugin by following the included instructions
minimize any windows that are in the way so you can access the desktop, then right click anywhere on the desktop and select configure desktop and wallpaper.
In the window that opens, click the second dropdown and select wallpaper engine for kde
The box at the bottom of the window should be blank, if it gives you a message telling you to install a dependency do that and then close re-open the window
once all dependencies are installed, click the folder icon in the center of the window and it will prompt you to select the steam library folder that contains wallpaper engine
Your downloaded wallpapers should appear, you can select one now, settings will allow you to select options like framerate, mute audio, etc.
Now you can download new wallpapers through the wallpaper engine client in steam, if you want to apply wallpapers you need to use the desktop settings in kde, not in wallpaper engine
