Crashed every time I ran after about a minute or two until I disabled Esync, after which it ran perfectly.
shows as running in my library for a few seconds, then syncing, then nothing. doesn't open the game.
Works fine with Dual-Shock 4
Works great. I can see myself using this game as a fun easy way of testing out different controllers.
This seems to run okay, but the resolution defaults to 960x540 which looks very blurry on a 1080p monitor. Luckily "Options" on the main menu was readable, and changing the resolution made the text readable. Launching a second time again defaulted to 960x540, but for some reason it wasn't blurry this time. Keyboard controls are very unintuitive, there are no instructions or options to remap/rebind keys, and what few button prompts there are are for a controller, whether or not one's plugged in. These appear to be problems with the game itself, rather than with proton, so I've given it a platinum rating.
Game crashed at launch until I used winetricks to install vcrun2017 as others have done, and was able to play a character I'd created on windows, however game would crash on returning to main menu or creating a new character. I fixed this by using winetricks to also install binkw32 (RAD Game Tools binkw32.dll) - new character was now playable (!!!), intro movie played, I played up to Lordran then quit to main menu without crashing. Continued game then a few seconds later quit to main menu again, and it crashed.
ran "protontricks 4600 mfc42" to install a missing DLL, then it ran at least as well as I remember it running on Windows XP back when I bought it in 2008
Worked fine until a few weeks ago. A few minor issues - Self Radio has never worked for me on Steam Play; the mouse cursor turns invisible when opening the Rockstar Social Club overlay; sound would go crackly after about three hours of gameplay.
Earlier this month, going online would cause the game to crash until the strace workaround others have mentioned was discovered. This worked for me, but caused other issues- my machine would hang, keyboard and mouse would be unresponsive, I could ssh in from my cellphone but rebooting would not work, I'd have to hard reset the machine to get it to work. On the plus side, the sound issue I'd been having seemed to have resolved itself.
Today, 31st January, someone posted on github a new fix: use "WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winedbg.exe=d %command%" in Launch Options. This works great for me so far (my own Launch options are now "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winedbg.exe=d %command%" ) and I've tested playing online twice, once loading in from Story Mode to Online, then again going straight from the main menu to Online. Half an hour each session, no problems. Will test for a longer session once I've had some sleep.
Tested self radio recently for the first time in months, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it works just fine, since it never used to. Playing with a keyboard you may want to change some keybindings, since shift (sprint) and tab (weapon wheel) together are the steam overlay's default shortcut. Also Alt by defaults changes character, which can cause problems when alt-tabbing out and back unless changed to a different key.
Run protontricks, Change settings, Set sound driver to ALSA
Game crashed at launch before main menu loaded until I changed sound driver with protontricks
The main problems I have online are caused by other players, but pretty much everything in online can be done in friend-only or invite-only sessions nowadays so these problems can now be largely avoided
This game tends to have a large update once or twice a year that breaks proton compatibility for some if not all of their linux players, but there's usually a fix found within at most a few weeks.
This game has a native Linux version which is no longer being updated by the developer. Using the latest Steam Client Beta (Steam -> Settings -> Account -> Beta Participation -> Steam Beta Update) I was able to force it to use Proton to run the latest Windows version of the game (by right-clicking "Human: Fall Flat" in my Library, going to Properties, and checking "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatability tool"). It seems to run okay, if anything a little smoother than the native version. I was able to join a game yesterday with about five other people, and spent a good 20-30 minutes flailing about with them.
Although there's now a native version for linux, there wasn't when I first tested this game about 5 months ago. I'm writing this report because my old one, (blank screen, no sound etc) no longer applies - not only does the native version work well, but all five currently available proton versions (3.7-8, 3.7-8 beta, 3.16-4, 3.16-8 beta, 4.2-1) run the windows version perfectly too.
Run protontricks, Change settings, Set sound driver to ALSA
Game would crash to desktop when going online without the protontricks fix, unless I disabled in-game voice-chat
occasionally I'll see some weird coloured lights through windows in valentine, or a strange texture on a road when I summon my wagon or start a moonshine sale
Online multiplayer is plagued with cheaters, but the same poker table and startup.meta methods of playing privately with your friends that work for windows players also work fine on linux.
Rockstar hasn't really added anything of substance to this game in the last two years, yet they still manage to break compatibility with minor changes to the game or their launcher maybe once every year or two. Any of these problems usually end up fixed by the proton devs or workarounds found by the player community pretty quickly.
Runs and plays nicely. First of the four episodes plays without an issue. Once the second episode loads, the screen goes black for about 10 seconds, then fades in on a scene at a desk, with a computer and a cup - but there's no mouse cursor and typing does nothing, pressing the Tab key, which walkthroughs say is the first thing you need to do to progress, does nothing. Pausing with the Escape key works, and the game can be exited.
Going into "Options" from the main menu gives the option to "Unlock All Levels" with a warning that it's designed to be played in sequence. I was able to start Episodes 3 and 4 this way, and played each for a few minutes but I didn't want to do too much because I want to know what happens in Episode 2 first.
