Game does not launch consistent with users below
I have tried the multiple tutorials listed on the net on how to fix this, and in fact I have been occasionally trying to get this game running in Linux for years now, and each time the tutorials are essentially consistent and never work. Recently some older Paradox games have gotten a patch which only changes the launcher to the game, including HoI3. After this patch, HoI3 still will not launch, but Victoria 2 (game released at about the same time, with a very similar launcher and same engine as HoI3) will under the past few different versions of Proton, indicating that for Victoria 2 it was the launcher that caused the problem, not the game itself, and now the launcher works fine under Proton. Previous to this official V2 patch, it wouldn't launch under Proton/Wine with the same apparent errors as all versions of HoI3 are having, including the latest patched version of HoI3. If you want to figure out what's wrong with the game, and are better at troubleshooting than me, I'd start with the HoI3 launcher.
Tried Proton 9 and Experimental, neither worked because the DRM triggered and prevented the game from running, GE 9-4 worked, I haven't tried 9-5 because the game features Denuvo and I didn't want to trigger Denuvo with too many failed launches because the service will usually block you from the playing the game after 5 DRM related issues in close succession.
Launcher fails to start about half of the time. Mod support is touchy because the launcher barely works in Linux. I cannot, for instance, load the 2.3 player patch into Homeworld 1 Remaster, I can only load "the 2.3 player patch" by itself, which means I can only play the mod outside of campaign mode. This is because the launcher's buttons mostly don't work. This is disappointing because this is the proper way to play Homeworld 1 Remaster.
Title screen does not work but everything else I have played works fine, including online.
I've seen some people mention stuttering. I believe this stuttering they are mentioning is caused by first time loading of audio. The first time the game loads any audio (such as when you hit somebody and they go "UGH" for the first time) the game hangs slightly. This can get ridiculous if you do something like a critical edge, which has many sound effects attached to it. However, that is only the first time. The second time you do that move it won't stutter, and oddly enough this carries over to multiple play-sessions. Shutting off the game or restarting PC does not cause the move to go back to stuttering, the first time your PC ever plays that sound, it never stutters again on that move, so just play the game for half an hour and stuttering issues all but vanish.
As of Soul Calibur 2.30 the game won't launch, no matter the environment variables or version of Proton used, including Proton GE.
THIS GAME IS BROKEN ON STEAM AND CAN BE FIXED. There are NO compatibility issues with this game on Linux, it's just that it is altogether broken on Steam, meaning it doesn't work on Windows since the 2023 patch, either. There are two versions of this game on Steam, the version you get if you don't own the DLC, and the two versions you get if you do own the DLC. In order for the game to launch, do this in order: (1)Install both. (2)Go to properties of "Special Steam Edition" and verify integrity of game files, it will fail and download about 400MB of files. (3)Do the same for "Absolute Power". FYI you need to do this on Windows, too, the game is just broken if you own the DLC barring these steps. There is no issue playing the game once the game is properly installed.
