I used Proton 8.0-2. Per other posts, I had to:

Go to the game files (Properties -> Local Files -> Browse) and edit direct2d.txt, setting both lines to false.

Go to "$STEAM_ROOT/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1154840/pfx/dosdevices/c:/windows" and rm system32/gdiplus.dll syswow64/gdiplus.dll.

Then install protontricks (which required winetricks) and run protontricks 1154840 -q corefonts gdiplus.

The game feels like it's rendering a bit slower (probably due to not using D2D?) but is perfectly playable.
