Main game screen does not launch but game reports running.
uplay://launch/4
Used Protontricks to install Ubisoft Connect using the command: protontricks-launch --appid 33230 UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe
Using a clean fresh install of the latest distro of Ubuntu 20.04 (as of the date of this submission) Using the default-installed nVidia 535 driver which works on other Steam Games with no problem. This is not a driver issue!
My GPU is an nVidia GTX-1050 ti... not a sound card! I also am running 16Gb of RAM CPU intel 2nd Generation 2500K running at 3.2 GHz
The in-steam-launcher did not attempt to install Ubisoft Connect after the initial install. Installed Ubisoft Connect manually using:
protontricks-launch --appid 33230 UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe
This successfully installed Ubisoft Connect to the Proton "c-drive" folder.
Launching the game using Proton Experimental OR using Proton 6.3.8 resulted in the game reporting itself as "Running" but the game screen did not launch, despite leaving it running for over ten minutes!
This technically runs but no game screen is displayed and no audio from the game is heard when launched.
This will require more tweaking.
Once installed and running it runs just fine and uses DirectX and 3D accelleration just fine.
Install Assassins Creed 2 directly on Steam for Linux first but do not run it! Make sure to connect your Lutirs account with your Steam Library, very important! Use Lutris to install Ubisoft Connect then run and log into your Ubisoft Connect account. NOW use Lutris to launch Assassins Creed 2 just once. All should be well at this point ;)
Occasionally the game will just stop and you will be looking at the desktop with no warning. Possible game-breaker, definite immersion breaker.
You will have problems installing Ubisoft Connect through Steam and Wine. Using Lutris to connect to your steam library first will connect the two and it will work just fine. Further launches for the game can be done directly from within Steam without using Lutris, you will not need to use Lutris if the game has launched once through the Lutris launch screen ;)
This game runs beautifully as long as you change the Proton version to 6.3.8. The rest is just smooth...
There is a slight mouse to screen lag given my hardware and that I am using a 2nd Gen Intel 2500k and also given the fact that I can't run Steam on the Proprietary nVidia Driver (!) but the game is using DirectX properly so the mouse lag is likely to be my hardware setup.
The game runs but even after adjusting the brightness to full it is still dark. The pickups being sunk into the main textures is not pretty!
No launch options requires
Pickups are sunk into the game world
Sometimes dropped to the desktop when trying to collect in-game item drops, sometimes crashed out of the game completely.
Over all this game runs out of the box when using the Experimental option but Proton version 6-3-8 may work better for you. Apart from the graphical glitch where the pickups are sunk into the graphics and the occassional drop out when collecting certain in-game items this game is pretty much playable. Running on Ubuntu 20.04.06 with a fresh clean install. Using an nVidia GTX 1050ti with an Intel Quad Core 2500K and 16Gb of DDR3 Ram on Ubunto 20.04.06. No system anomalies noted at the time of this report.
Installs but reports DirectX 9.0c not installed!
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1
Installed perfectly and configured Vulkan Shaders when first run but did not start. Every launch of the game reports that either the Graphic Card or the Drivers do not support DirectX 9.0c. Installed DirectX via Winetricks but made no difference. Game refuses to run even when Proton is backed to 9.0-2 :( For some reason this game is broken on my system :(
Graphics GPU is nVidia 1050ti running on Intel 2500K with 16Gb of RAM using Ubuntu 20.04.06
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1
Used Winetricks to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Wine. 32-bit is required for this game to start!
Install this game before selecting Proton Version. Tried selecting before install and it didn't work!
This game requires a 32-bit version of Wine and for some reaosn will not start without it. It also requires the 32-bit nVidia Driver to be installed (or whichever 32-bit driver is required for your card) or it will fail completely with no DirectX support shown. If using nVidia then use
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libnvidia-gl-YOUR_DRIVER_VERSION:i386
Apart from one graphical UV Texture error this game runs as smooth as butter on the given hardware ;)
One of the reports mentions an issue with loud bursts of audio which may damage speakers or hearing. Personally I did not suffer this but I was running with default on-board sound and standard Linux audio drivers so maybe with different hardware this may be an issue.
With sub-titles enabled under windows there was a significant delay between sentences when characters were talking with each other. Running on Linux through Proton there is no delay at the end of sentences and the sub-titles keep up with the audio just fine, meaning that this game runs faster and more efficiently on Linux through Proton than it does on Windows... when you can get it to actually run on Windows ;)
Over all a good solid gaming experience even if you don't like the game itself, the Proton Protocol jus works beautifully with it.
Apart from restoring the aspect ration and the issue with the really loud deafening noise at times this game plays perfectly.
Edit the Default.ini file in the path .steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Deus Ex Invisible War/System. Edit the following lines to read the following for a 16:10 aspect ratio: FOV__d=53 AssumedUIScreenWidth__d=640 AssumedUIScreenHeight__d=480 Choose 800 x 600 in-game. This will restore the correct aspect ratio so that you can see the "drop" and "Cancel" buttons in the main weapons menu.
Certain actions in the game will emit a FULL VOLUME noise from your speakers regardless of game or system volume settings. This is potentially damaging to ears and speakers. One notable actions is using the Spy Drone Biomod. As soon as it is activated the speakers go full-volume deafening random noise until it is deactivated. Beware there are other actions and areas in the game that trigger this noise.
Beware of the random noise when triggering certain actions, it is loud! Also the aspect ratio must be altered in the /System/Defailt.ini file. The game will play without altering this but you will lose the bottom and top sections of your HUD if you do not change these settings directly in the .ini file. Apart from that this game plays a lot faster than it does on Windows and the subtitles actually keep up with the speech ;)
When it runs, it runs. When it crashes it crashes. When it runs it runs beautifully! There is no control over it crashing...
No launch options required
When running at 1024 x 768 the mouse was severely lagged. Reducing the resolution to 800 x 600 reduced the lag significantly but it was still present.
Changed the Textures to medium and forced the resolution to 800 x 600. It will run at 1024 x 768 but it is laggy due to DX9 interpretation.
When collecting some items the game would switch to the desktop without crashing but it would crash out completely and close the game at random after extensive gameplay.
You will need to use Proton version 6-3-8 and you will need to set the resolution to 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 or you will get Direct X crashes and the game will not run!
You may need to launch it several times after the initial install to get it to run stable but when it runs it runs good. However it will switch out to the desktop when collecting certain in-game items and you will have to switch back to the game which continues to run in the background. It will randomly crash out completely so watch out for that and save frequently!!!
I had good results from playing this with Proton 6-3-8 and it ran beautifully at 800 x 600 resolution, anything above 1024 x 768 crashes the Direct X rendering so maybe somebody with more experience will be able to work around that ;)
My system is an old Intel Quad Core 2500K with 16Gb of DDR3 RAM and an nVidia GTX 1050 ti running on the default Ubuntu 535 Proprietary Tested drivers.
If you don't mind the screen lag and are happy to resuce the resolution to 800 x 600 with reduced textures then this plays beautifully.
There is no degredation BUT you will need to lower the channels down to 16 from the defaulted 28 which crashes out the game. ?!? 28 channels ?!?
As mentioned there is significant screen lag on the mouse.
Given the hardware this is running on there is significant moue to screen movement lag at any resolution above 800 x 600. Also the textures had to be reduced to low or minimum to get any playable movement out of the game given the movement lag. A higher spec. hardware setup will most likely play much smoother.
To be honest the reduced textures are not noticeable, even when enabloing the HDTP Texture pack in the menu. The main issue here is mouse lag but again, that may be due to the hardware and driver settings on the tested platform. This game does run under the 6.3.8 Proton setting.
One of the easiest game to gt running "right out of the box" :)
No tinkering here, just install and opt for the latest experimental Proton Version, then launch the game. Runs fast enough even on old hardware and plays perfectly. The tested install had the DLC's for Garden Flipper, HGTV, Luxury Flipper, Pets, Apocalypse and Cyberpunk and at the time of testing they all worked just fine, no tinkering needed and no crashes experienced. This should install and run straight out of the box with no problem as of the date of this submission.
In-game volume control does NOTHING! Everything is full volume!
If you don't mind lowering the system volume, or being deafened by the in-game volume, then this game will run pretty much "out of the box". It may run a bit quicker than you expect because of the in-game timing coding but it does run with no tweaks. The in-game volume control has absolutely no effect but as mentioned, lowering the system volume before launching will work around this. Apart from that you will enjoy this game ;)
