I have played it extensively on Windows and would not say that the experience on linux is worse in any regards, as soon as controllers worke
Tinker Steps:Switch to older version: 7.0-6

Only 1 controller detected with latest proton (9). Switched to Proton 7.0.6 and they worked without any hassle.
