Linux and Windows versions of BL2 have their save files in different places, and Steam doesn't understand this. Copying the files between locations fixed the problem.
Trying to mod the Windows version of Borderlands 2 under Proton and Linux actually breaks things I can't fix, so don't try, but before that I was having a lot of fun playing BL2 again.
It's very fun, and runs extremely well under Linux and Proton. I would heartily recommend using the Windows version through Proton instead of the native Linux version, which appears to have massive performance problems. I'm only getting 20fps on a GTX1650 card, versus a pretty consistent 60-to-70fps under Proton instead.
Very short game.
Crashed the very first time I launched the game, but subsequent launches have been fine.
Incredibly stable
As I said above, it's an incredibly stable experience. I'd left it running long enough for my screensaver to kick in, and returning to it after that caused absolutely no problems. I was even able to leave it running while I switched away to other programs to browse the internet while I held it on Pause, and had absolutely no trouble returning again.
Not only that, once I turned off VSync, I was getting anywhere from 200-400FPS on a stable basis. And absolutely no trouble during combat, either.
Had to delete files and rerun support software installs
As everyone else has commented, I had to delete the .reg files in the relevant steamapps/compatdata/530890/pfx/ and let Steam/Proton rebuild them and reinstall the support software again. After that, it ran quite nicely, for the short period after that I ran it.
So far it works well.
I haven't reached very far (mostly because I've been waiting for Workshop support and mods to improve the ease of play), but so far the only problem I've had is a message when the game ends about memory leaks.
Not terribly well optimized, but I suspect that's the game's fault.
Crashed very shortly after first launch, then ran very smoothly after that.
Crashes at random on startup
Buggy as HECK. Either Proton keeps taking "EOSSDK.dll" in and out of reach of the game, and the game crashes before it reaches loading your saved game, or it runs just fine for hours on end.
Otherwise, a very smooth experience. Just remember to save often.
Granting achievements appears to crash the rendering system. When I switched away from the game and switched back, it consistently failed to do any rendering at all.
It would still allow switching between windows and virtual desktops, and sound would still play, but nothing would render.
Not running for any period of time
No matter which version of Proton I choose (so far, 5.0-9, 4.11-13, 4.2-9, as well as just plain Wine 3.0-ubuntu1), it would exit within five seconds of launch. I'm not sure what other options to try, as I haven't been able to find any sort of error log file.
Once you're playing, it's fine. Getting there is annoying.
In all menus, the game's custom mouse cursor doesn't get undrawn before getting redrawn in the new location, leaving smeared cursor images all over the screen. Again, not sure if it's the game's fault or Proton's.
The game is rendering its own mouse cursor, which is somewhat but noticeably sluggish compared to the OS-drawn one.
Won't exit properly. Have to kill it manually.
Lots of fun, sometimes crashes.
Occasional texture flashing. Mostly glitches that have been a part of ME2 for years, which includes some closed caption words having black backgrounds instead of allowing the scene behind to show through.
Sometimes doesn't start. Crashed once when I tried to save manually, so I'm very glad it saves automatically.
Almost all the links ME2 has for dealing with your (now called Origin) EA account are out of date, and won't do anything useful. If you already have the game on Origin, you should be able to get away with buying just the base game, and using your Origin account to run it.
Make sure you have autosaving turned on!
Otherwise enjoyable.
Slightly jerky motion, which is quite distracting if you're concentrating too hard.
Poorly optimized, but does run well enough with graphics set fairly low.
Textures appear to be fine so far, but the effects appear to flicker a fair bit.
Opening video was black, and I had to switch to Windowed mode with Alt+Enter for anything else to show up. May have to install the Media Foundation tools to get the opening video to play.
Given the age of the game and how recent my hardware is, I should be getting a higher FPS than 25, especially on the pause screen!
Random slow-downs whenever visiting a new location. I can only surmise that the game isn't caching compiled shaders and is compiling them on the fly.
Failed to launch with "abnormal termination" error.
Haven't tried anything just yet, may have more information later.
Game launches without mf-install, but it's skipped over at least one video at launch before showing the menu.
Fails to launch with a "Desktop Compositing disabled" error.
Even telling Proton to emulate a desktop (using WineCfg on the appropriate Proton folder) does not fix this.
Definite audio problems made just playing the game unenjoyable.
It's not horrifically bad, but it is nowhere near what it should be playing like.
