No tweaks required, saving works perfectly. I found that, oddly enough, my FPS actually increased when I turned the graphics up.

I ran the built-in performance benchmark in both the native port and Proton on Ultra settings. Proton had an average 10 FPS more.
Multiplayer in the native port only works across Unix machines (Linux and Mac can play together), but does not cross play to Windows. Combined with the performance perks of running in Proton, I don't see a reason not to just play in Proton.
