Game installed and proton installed extra required software but wouldn't startup.
Running the following command allowed me to get into the game: protontricks 1086940 dotnet48
Very enjoyable game, no issue playing with friends and family outside of the in-game voice chat.
Using the in-game voice chat doesn't work, but can be gotten around by using the Steam voice chat.
There are bugs in the game but I've not hit any that do not exist on windows also. Bug tracker here: https://dwarffortress.mantishub.io
As noted in another report deleting the *.reg files located in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/530890/pfx/ helped getting this game to run.
I had to quit steam and load steam again. Haven't had any trouble since.
Game doesn't start at all

I've tried various versions of proton including the latest GE at this time, very shortly after the pressing play the button goes from "Cancel" back to "Play", same on each version tried (as far back as 3.7-8), with and without the launch options
